Biography

Dr. Cox is originally from Maine, though she has lived also in Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Montpelier, France where she taught English.  She has traveled extensively and plans trips for students on demand.  Dr. Cox has taught French since 1986 in various US universities.  She coordinates the French program and the Second Language Education program in French, Spanish, and ESL.  She is the faculty sponsor for Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society and for MOSAIC, the French language club.  Her area of specialization is the French novel and second language pedagogy.  She has presented and published work on various subjects and has worked for the State of North Carolina on Second Language and ESL licensure policies.  Dr. Cox received the GWU Excellence in Teaching award in 2007.

Jessica is  assistant professor of sign language, has nearly 20 years of experience in professional interpreting. She graduated from the University of North Florida with a M.S. in Interpreting Pedagogy and received her bachelor鈥檚 degree from Bob Jones University. Grant became a nationally-certified interpreter at the advanced level in 2008, and later graduated from the University of Northern Colorado graduate Legal Interpreter Training Program. One of her favorite stories from her career was interpreting skiing lessons at a Deaf Expo in the mountains of California. The requirement was for the interpreter to be able to ski backwards while interpreting for the ski instructor. She and her husband have just recently celebrated the birth of their 2-month-old son.

Biography

Dr. Martin was born in Germany. His research interests are medieval literature, literature & national identity, and cultural studies. He published several books and articles on the Nibelungenlied, the reception of medieval literature, the role of literature in the context of German nationalism, and the role of German as a second language in the US.

Biography

Professor of Spanish at GWU since 1997, Dr. Charles B. Moore has spent nearly two years of his career living, working, traveling, and studying in Spain and over ten Latin American countries. He served as a GS-12 Latin American Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense at Fr. Bragg, NC and Washington, DC in the 1980s, and during summers since 1984 he still serves as a Spanish Administrative Interpreter for the U.S. Department of State鈥檚 International Visitor Program (IVLP). Dr. Moore is the former president of the North Carolina Foreign Language Association (FLANC), the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA), and the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP-NC). He has won several university, state, regional, and national awards such as the FLANC (2011), SCOLT (2009), and AATSP (2009) Higher Ed Teacher of the Year Awards, the Orden de los Descubridores Sigma Delta Pi National Spanish Honor Society Service Award (2008), the GWU Scholarship Award (2012), the GWU Students with Disabilities Teacher Recognition Award (2001), and the Sigma Delta Pi-Albatros Ediciones Book Award (2025). 

Author of two books, Legado l铆rico: amistad petrarquista y poes铆a hispanoamericana (Valencia: Albatros Ediciones, 2025) and El arte de predicar de Juan de Espinosa Medrano en La novena maravilla (Lima: Universidad Cat贸lica, 2000), as well as more than 40 pier-reviewed articles on colonial, 19th-century, and contemporary literary topics in the Spanish language, Dr. Moore is a frequent presenter at MIFLC, SAMLA, and other annual conferences. Along with teaching all levels of Spanish from core to upper-level literary seminars at GWU, Dr. Moore serves as Sigma Delta Pi-GWU Tau Omega Chapter sponsor and program director for Spanish in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. He has served on numerous university-level committees at GWU including the Athletic Committee, Tenure and Promotion Committee, Student and Campus Life Committee, and Academic Policy and Standards Committee. He is a member of Central United Methodist Church in Shelby, NC, where he lives with his wife, Teralea. In their spare time, the Moores enjoy international travel, gardening, reading, exercising at the Shelby YMCA, and enjoying family and friends.

Biography

Mr.  Moore  joined the 国产哟哟 faculty in 2002 as an Adjunct Professor of ASL in the Dept. of World Languages, Literature, and Culture. In 2006 he became a fulltime Instructor of ASL. Prior to coming to 国产哟哟, Mr. Moore taught ASL at Central Piedmont Community College from 1993 to 2005 and also served as a Pastor to the Deaf at the First Baptist Deaf Mission in Charlotte, NC from 1986 to 2006.

Mr. Moore received his bachelors鈥� degree at Gallaudet University in Washington DC and his Master of Divinity Degree at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA and has taken additional graduate courses in Linguistics through the Summer Institute of Linguistics at the University of North Dakota.  Mr. Moore is ASLTA certified and is a trained SLPI evaluator.

Mr. Moore has been active with the Southern Baptist Conference of the Deaf where he served in various capacities including President. He also was one of the founding members of the World Congress of Deaf Baptists. He has written for the Deaf Bible Study quarterly with Lifeway Christian Resources. He has led workshops on sign classifiers for international schools and the Southern Baptist Interpreter Training Program. He also is active with the North Carolina American Sign Language Teachers Association.

Biography

Dr. Phillips earned her Masters of Arts and her Women鈥檚 Studies Certificate from the University of Kentucky in 1998. Dr. Phillips鈥檚 PhD thesis, 鈥淪ex and the Lettered City: Female Eroticism and Subjectivity in the Poetry of Eunice Odio and Ana Istar煤鈥� was defended successfully in 2010, also at the University of Kentucky. The work focuses on the interrelationship between Angel Rama鈥檚 concept of the ciudad letrada and female eroticism and subjectivity. Additionally, Dr. Phillips has directed the Study Abroad program in Costa Rica at GWU since 2001. Additionally, she spearheaded the development and implementation of the Hispanic Film course now taught for Spanish majors at GWU. Apart from her interest in teaching and research on women writers, she also strives to be physically fit with zumba, body pump, and kickboxing. The rest of her free time is filled with reading novels, writing, spending time with friends and family, traveling, and treasure hunting in thrift stores.
