Biography

Joshua Cheney, a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at 国产哟哟 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. He is responsible for the leadership and administration of GWU Choirs, to include the direction of the Concert Choir and Reach Worship. Joshua also teaches Aural Skills, Music Survey, and courses in conducting, voice, woodwinds, and guitar.

Joshua is an active performer and has sung professionally with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir, Bel Canto Company, Red Shift, Coro Vocati, and Blue Ridge Consort. Joshua is a regular clinician, adjudicator, and presenter, having directed honor choirs, adjudicated choral festivals, and given lectures at professional conferences throughout the United States. Previous appointments include service as the Assistant Professor of Choral Music at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, Choral Music Educator at John M. Morehead High School in Eden, North Carolina, and Choral Music Educator at Harnett Central Middle School in Angier, North Carolina. He has served in music ministry as the Interim Music Minister for the First Baptist Church of Marion, North Carolina, Interim Music Minister for the First Baptist Church of Asheville, North Carolina, and Assistant Director of Music and Worship at the First United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He currently serves as a Staff Singer at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Joshua holds the B.A. in Music Education from Campbell University, the M.M. in Choral Conducting and Church Music from Mercer University, and the D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from Louisiana State University. Joshua is married to Rebekah Cheney, who serves as the Director of Annual Giving at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Joshua and Rebekah reside in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dr. Sarah Fabian is the Director of Bands and an Assistant Professor of Music at 国产哟哟. Among her duties, she directs the 国产哟哟 Symphonic Band, The Marching Bulldogs and GWU Pep Band, in addition to teaching music education courses.

A passionate advocate for music education at all levels, Dr. Fabian is internationally recognized as a clinician, educator, conductor, adjudicator, presenter and performer. She is actively involved in scholarly research and frequently presents at conferences internationally, nationally, and regionally. Most recently presenting at the 2024 NAfME Biennial Conference in Atlanta, IMEA in Iowa, IMEA in Indiana, ILMEA in Illinois, MTNA in Minnesota and CBDNA Western and North Western Conference in Reno, Nevada this year.

Dr. Fabian was humbly awarded the 2025 Yamaha 鈥�40 Under 40鈥� Music Educators Excellence award. Chosen from hundreds of nominations as an outstanding young music educator who is making a difference by growing and strengthening the band programs here at 国产哟哟. She was also awarded the 2024 Rising Star Award for 国产哟哟. This award is given to a faculty member who demonstrates consistent excellence in scholarship, teaching and service.  More information about her award can be found on the GWU news page.

Prior to her role at 国产哟哟, Dr. Fabian served as the Director of Bands at Buena Vista University, where she taught undergraduate instrumental conducting, class percussion, and private lessons. She also conducted the concert band, marching band, and pep band.

Dr. Fabian earned her Ph.D. in Music Education from George Mason University. She holds a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Music Education with a concentration in Percussion from Towson University and a Master鈥檚 in Music Education from Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory.

Fabian has the privilege of being endorsed by Vic Firth sticks, Zildjan cymbals, Balter mallets, and Remo Drumheads. She is a proud member of several professional organizations, including the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the North Carolina Music Educators Association, International Society for Music Educators (ISME), and the Percussive Arts Society (PAS).

Tim Hudson is a Yamaha Performing Artist, Summit Recording Artist, Associate Professor of Trumpet at 国产哟哟, a founding member of Carolina Brass and in 2015 joined The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. He is a graduate of Indiana University, New England Conservatory of Music, and UNC Greensboro.

As a performer, Mr. Hudson has been a member of professional orchestras in the U.S. and abroad under world class conductors including Lorin Maazel, Yoel Levi, Leonard Slatkin, Grant Llewellyn, Andrew Litton, James DePreist, Gerard Schwarz, Mariss Jansons, Gunther Schuller, Skitch Henderson and Enrique Batiz. He has held the Principal Trumpet position with the Knoxville Symphony (TN), Chamber Orchestra of Northern New York, New England Philharmonic, Symphony Orchestra of the State of Mexico, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and the NC Opera and Ballet Orchestras. He is a former member of the Charlotte Symphony, International Orchestra (Israel), New England Chamber Orchestra, the Camerata Chamber Orchestra (IN), and has played with the Oslo Philharmonic (Norway), Mid-Atlantic Chamber Orchestra (DC), Boston Philharmonic, Greensboro Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic (IN), NC Symphony, and has been playing with the Charleston Symphony since 2017. 

Mr. Hudson performed and recorded a PBS Special with the Canadian Brass, Canterbury Brass and Star of Indiana, and has recorded for Summit Records, Academy Sound and Vision, Ltd. (London), OSEM (Mexico), Mode Records (NY), Mark Records (NY), Mellencamp and Associates Group of the Navarre Corp. (IN), and IBA (Israel) labels. As an artist/educator, he has performed throughout the US, Mexico, England, New Zealand, Taiwan, Israel, China, Austria, Italy and the Cayman Islands. He has been a winner of chamber music competitions at Fischoff (IN), Coleman (CA), and the NY Brass Conference Quintet Competition. His interest in new music has led to dozens of world premiere performances and recordings including Copper Lake Fantasy by David P. Jones, written for Mr. Hudson and Boston Symphony Orchestra Pianist Deborah Dewolf Emery, Piedmont Suite for Carolina Brass by Arthur Frackenpohl, and Language Of The Soul by Gwyneth Walker, which Mr. Hudson premiered live on NPR鈥檚 The State of Things.

As an educator, Mr. Hudson has been teaching trumpet since 1983 and began his college teaching career at the age of 25. He was the primary Instructor of Trumpet at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam where he received 鈥淭he 1991-1992 Most Outstanding Faculty Member鈥� award for the State University of New York at Potsdam. He has also taught at the Conservatory of Music of the State of Mexico, was Associate Instructor of Trumpet at Indiana University, Visiting Professor at USC Columbia, Lecturer at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, Brass Division Head/Professor of Trumpet at Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan, Lecturer at UNC School of the Arts, and Orchestra Conductor and Trumpet Instructor at High Point University. From 1990-1998, he was on the music faculty at the New England Music Camp in Oakland, Maine, and for two summers, on the Artist/Faculty of the Affetti Music Festival in Anchorage, Alaska. Mr. Hudson has given numerous masterclasses and solo recitals at many of the nations leading universities. He regularly publishes articles, arranges and transcribes music, is a former member of the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild, a Record Reviewer for the International Trumpet Guild Journal, and an adjudicator for the National Trumpet Competition. He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha, as well as the national honor societies of Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Eta Sigma. His former students currently hold or have held positions in orchestras such as the LA Philharmonic, Houston Symphony (Associate Principal), Mexico City Philharmonic (Principal Trumpet), Charlotte Symphony (Principal Trumpet), Dallas Symphony, Colorado Symphony (Principal Trumpet), Charleston Symphony (Principal Trumpet), play on Broadway, freelance successfully, teach k-12, are university professors, the senior brass instructor for Carolina Crown, and former member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Mr. Hudson is the founding member and Director of the Carolina Brass, an ensemble committed to arts in education. Under his direction, Carolina Brass has become a national touring ensemble and Summit Recording Artist, with compact disc recordings distributed internationally on the Summit Record label and broadcasts on National Public Radio and UNC-TV. 

In addition, Mr. Hudson maintains a very active performance schedule playing with groups like The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass, Carolina Brass, Carolina Ballet, the Charleston Symphony, and for the past 30 years, backing up pop/jazz artists such as Ray Charles, The Temptations, Manhattan Transfer, Neil Sedaka, Tony Bennett, Andrea Bocelli, Branford Marsalis, Mannheim Steamroller, Kenny Rogers, Mike Cross, Bobby Vinton, The Moody Blues, Chuck Mangione, Marvin Hamlisch, Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Doc Severinsen and Dizzy Gillespie.

Biography

Eric Johnson is the Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education for 国产哟哟. Prior to pursuing the Ph.D. degree in Music Education from the University of Mississippi, he was the choral director at James E. Holmes Middle School in Eden, NC, where he directed a vibrant choral program for over nine years.聽 With B.M. degrees from Appalachian State University in Music Education and Sacred Music Performance, as well as an M.M. degree in Music Education from the Florida State University, he is very active in the musical world as an educator, clinician, and presenter. He also holds Orff Level 1 and 2 certifications from Appalachian State University. His research interests include聽singer placement and spacing, singer confidence, adolescent vocal development, repertoire selection, assessment practices, and the recruitment and retention of singers.聽Eric also served on the executive boards for NCMEA and NC ACDA and in various capacities with children鈥檚 and church choirs.
