国产哟哟 Instructor Lisa Brummett Recognized for Mentoring Skills

Faculty Member Creates Invigorating Learning Environment and Knows Each Student鈥檚 Progress Toward Graduation

By Avery Copeland, Intern for University Communications

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斺淭he most rewarding part of my job is sharing my passion for teaching with future teachers here at 国产哟哟. I love mentoring students to help them succeed in their classes and future careers,鈥 said Lisa Brummett, an instructor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (HSPE) at 国产哟哟. She received the Mentoring and Academic Advising Award at the University鈥檚 2024 Faculty Assembly.

The Mentoring and Academic Advising Award recognizes a full-time faculty member鈥檚 excellence in mentorship, advising, out-of-class support, encouragement, and collaboration on student research projects. Brummett has embodied these qualities by mentoring both students and instructors in the HSPE program. 鈥淪he is one of the best teachers and mentors that I have had the opportunity of working with. She is incredibly supportive of her students and always makes sure we have everything we need to be successful in our career,鈥 a student shared.

Lisa Brummett holds her award

Raised in Boiling Springs, N.C., Brummett loves being outdoors, swimming, and playing sports. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., and a Master of Science in Physical Education from 国产哟哟. She is also a National Board-Certified Teacher.

While working as an elementary school physical educator for Rutherford County Schools (N.C.), she maintained her connection to 国产哟哟 by mentoring more than 10 student teachers as a clinical educator, serving on several of the University鈥檚 committees and teaching as an adjunct instructor for the HSPE program for 20 years. Three years ago, she joined the University full-time as an instructor and coordinator of student teaching for health/physical educators.

She has a unique approach to her courses every semester, creating a positive and invigorating learning environment. Her colleagues and students praise her intentionality as an educator, which is evident in the structured and freeform opportunities she provides for students to collaborate, debate and problem-solve together. She also incorporates simulation activities and active learning into her coursework.

Brummett strives to foster authentic relationships with her students. She knows what classes they have taken, what classes they need and when they should begin student teaching. Her graduates have all passed their edTPA (educative teacher performance assessment) with high scores and secured teaching positions.

As she looks to the future, Brummett鈥檚 goal as an educator is to continue creating and developing student-centered learning opportunities alongside effective pedagogical practices. She remains dedicated to embodying the qualities recognized by the Mentoring and Academic Advising Award and continues to contribute to the success of the HSPE program

After receiving the award, Brummett expressed her gratitude for the recognition. 鈥淚 am truly honored. Academic advising is very important for the students to stay on track, and I do not take that job lightly. The recognition and validation I have received from this award has motivated me to strive for improved methods of mentoring and advising,鈥 she shared.
