24-Hour Day of Giving Strengthens the Future of Healthcare by Supporting Hands鈥慜n Training and Student Research

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敼从 will host the 11th annual Double Dawg Day on April 16, a 24-hour celebration of generosity, community, and the impact of donor support. Each year, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends come together to champion the people, programs, and priorities that strengthen the GWU student experience.

In the College of Health Sciences, donor gifts advance hands-on training and professional preparation. Dr. Tracy Arnold, the college鈥檚 dean and professor of nursing, said recent support has upgraded essential equipment鈥攕uch as hospital beds, low-fidelity manikins, and exercise bikes鈥攁nd helped fund student research and conference presentations.

鈥淭hese resources allow students to apply classroom knowledge in practical and scholarly ways,鈥 Arnold noted. 鈥淓very gift goes toward enhancing academic programs, student experiences, and essential resources that ultimately provide stronger career readiness and increase the confidence of graduates as they prepare to enter the workforce.鈥

Strengthening Nursing Readiness

Nursing students said this equipment is vital to becoming clinically prepared. Senior Abigail Henson, of Kings Mountain, N.C., shared that working with updated hospital beds and manikins prepared her for bedside care. 鈥淭hey provide a safe, hands-on environment to practice nursing skills,鈥 she said. 鈥淧racticing on manikins allows me to learn and grow, ultimately shaping me into a more confident nurse who prioritizes patient safety in real-world care.鈥

Senior India Page, of Boiling Springs, agreed that the equipment gives students a solid foundation for clinical work. 鈥淏eing able to practice skills and get comfortable with (manikins) puts me at an advantage if I鈥檓 asked to perform them on an actual patient during clinical,鈥 she explained. Page said opportunities to practice medication administration, IV insertion, and wound care on manikins made her better prepared for real-world expectations.

Both students expressed deep gratitude for those who give on Double Dawg Day. Henson said, 鈥淵our support directly impacts my education and helps me become a safer, more competent nurse.鈥

Page observed that donor generosity not only strengthens student learning but also supports dedicated nursing faculty. 鈥淭he School of Nursing at 国产哟哟 has some of the best instructors I鈥檝e had the opportunity to learn from,鈥 Page acknowledged. 鈥淭hey work endlessly to give us a solid foundation.鈥

Opportunities for Psychology Research

Donor support also creates academic opportunities for psychology majors Grace Haynie and Rachel Gaura, seniors who conducted undergraduate research and presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Convention (SEPA).

Haynie, who plans to further her education in graduate school, described the research experience as one of the most rewarding opportunities of her 国产哟哟 education. She explained, 鈥淕etting to present our work at conferences, such as SEPA, made me proud of the effort we put into the research. To the donors, I say a big 鈥楾hank you.鈥 Your contributions make it possible for students like me to further my experiences and grow in my psychological knowledge. You have greatly shaped some of my favorite college memories and experiences.鈥

Through her participation in undergraduate research, Gaura said she developed skills that will support her as a ministry leader. 鈥淲orking with both faculty and peers expanded my knowledge of psychology, while also building my confidence in working with professionals,鈥 she noted. 鈥淭hese experiences strengthened my communication, critical thinking, and professionalism, all of which will be essential as I pursue ministry and work closely with youth and young adults. I feel better prepared to understand people thoughtfully, speak confidently, and lead with both knowledge and care in my future career.鈥

Gaura also offered her appreciation to donors. 鈥淵our generosity has truly shaped my college experience at 国产哟哟 and allowed me to grow both academically and personally,鈥 she stated. 鈥淏ecause of your support, my studies feel meaningful and valued, and I feel encouraged knowing that someone believes in my education and future. I hope you will continue giving so other students can have the same opportunities I had.鈥

Practical Exercise Science Training

Exercise science bike IMG

Exercise science students also benefit from equipment purchased with donor support. Jamiel Col贸n, who earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in exercise science in 2025, will complete his Master of Science in strength and conditioning in 2026. He is also a teaching assistant in 国产哟哟鈥檚 Carolina Chiropractic Plus Human Performance Laboratory.

鈥淏ecause of your previous generosity, our students are not just learning theory from a textbook,鈥 Col贸n affirmed. 鈥淭hey are running real fitness tests, handling industry-standard equipment, and practicing exactly what they鈥檒l be asked to do in collegiate, professional, and private performance settings. Your donated equipment allowed me, personally, to gain hands-on experience with diverse testing protocols, learn proper procedures, interpret data, and manage the inevitable chaos of testing days. That experience gave me a genuine competitive edge in the field of strength and conditioning and accelerated my development as a coach.鈥

exercise science bike iMG

Col贸n sees those same benefits continuing for current students. 鈥淭he equipment you helped provide is used multiple times per week to train freshmen and upperclassmen alike,鈥 Col贸n emphasized. 鈥淔reshmen are exposed early to real-world expectations and evolving industry standards, while upperclassmen refine their testing skills, deepen their data analysis abilities, and practice communicating key findings to future clients and athletes. In other words, your support is directly shaping the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals.鈥

He concluded, 鈥淚 would strongly encourage you to give again this year, because the demand for this kind of hands-on education is only growing. Your renewed gift doesn鈥檛 just buy equipment; it creates confident, competent professionals who are truly prepared for the field. You鈥檙e investing in people, and their careers, in a way that simply wouldn鈥檛 be possible without your generosity.鈥

Ways to Give on Double Dawg Day

Olivia Granger Develops Lab Techniques While Conducting Cancer Biology Research

At the end of her internship at Wake Forest Baptist Health,
Olivia Granger presented a poster on her research findings.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擠uring her internship, 国产哟哟 exercise science major, Olivia Granger of Winston-Salem, N.C., gained insight into cancer biology research, while realizing her own ability to adapt and grow. Working in Dr. David Soto-Pantoja鈥檚 lab at Wake Forest Baptist Health, she quickly adjusted to a new environment filled with unfamiliar terminology, tools, and techniques.

鈥淭he only experience I had with microbiology until this internship was my General Microbiology class the semester before,鈥 shared Granger. That class gave her basic knowledge about the anatomy of cells and how they work, and she learned how to use a pipette, a common laboratory tool that measures and transfers small volumes of liquid accurately.

As she worked in the hands-on setting, Granger developed critical-thinking abilities and laboratory skills, and she was given an opportunity to present her findings at a Wake Med Symposium. 鈥淚 researched how to overcome cancer-related cardiotoxicities,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚 worked with cardiac cells, specifically H9C2 from rats, and treated them with doxorubicin (DOX), a cancer treatment medicine, and blocked CD47, a cell receptor.鈥

When she arrived at the internship, she began by studying a few of her mentor鈥檚 published works and the presentations he gives to his doctoral students. 鈥淚 enjoyed being in a new situation, being able to learn from my environment,鈥 Granger observed. 鈥淚 feel that being in this situation helped me learn that experiencing new situations can benefit your knowledge even if you go into the experience with minimal to no knowledge. I feel this will help me in my future as a way to further my education with my doctorate and in my career.鈥

Olivia Granger listens to instructions from 国产哟哟 Assistant Professor of Exercise Science Dr. Jonathan Ahearn during a functional movement screen lab at the GWU College of Health Sciences.

Granger hypothesized that metabolic changes caused by cancer could make patients more likely to suffer harmful side effects from chemotherapy. While studying the cells, Granger performed several techniques, such as Western Blots to detect and analyze specific proteins in a sample, and Immunohistochemistry, used to identify and visualize specific proteins in tissue samples. She also used Fluorescence Imaging to visualize cells and molecules by attaching fluorescent dyes or proteins, and In Vitro Cell Culturing, a technique in which cells, tissues, or organisms are grown and maintained in a controlled laboratory environment, typically in a plastic dish or flask, using nutrient-rich cell culture media.

Through her studies, she concluded that changes in how the body uses energy can make patients more likely to experience harmful side effects from cancer treatments, such as heart damage or cardiotoxicity. 鈥淥ur findings suggest that blocking CD47 could be a new way to protect the heart during cancer therapy,鈥 Granger summarized.

Also a student in the GWU Accelerated Master of Science in Strength and Conditioning program, Granger is back on the GWU campus to complete her bachelor’s and finish her master’s. She enjoys serving as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in science labs and was asked to serve as a TA by Instructor of Biology Stacie Smith after taking Smith鈥檚 Anatomy and Physiology 2. 鈥淚 would say Ms. Smith has been my most meaningful mentor while at 国产哟哟,鈥 Granger noted. 鈥淭here are many times that I would meet her during her office hours to ask advice about other classes or just to talk in general. There have been many times over my years here that Ms. Smith noticed I was upset and allowed me to talk to her, and she would give me advice. She is genuinely someone that I would go to for anything.鈥

Olivia Granger gives directions to her lab partners in the functional
movement screen lab.

Another mentor who has given Granger support and advice is 国产哟哟 staff member, Kara Alves, director of Success Initiatives and First Year Experiences. Granger serves as a Peer Leader for University 111, a program under Alves鈥 leadership that helps first-year students learn techniques for success in college. 鈥淚 have enjoyed making connections with the incoming freshman each year and being there for them throughout their time at 国产哟哟, and not just during their first semester when they are taking University 111,鈥 Granger observed. 鈥淚 genuinely feel that I have made an impact with my students throughout my time here, and I hope I have had a positive impact on their experience.鈥

Funds Given to College of Health Sciences Support Purchase of Equipment

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擸our donations on Double Dawg Day can help prepare students in the College of Health Sciences in the fields of nursing and exercise science. Because technology and research evolve rapidly, these programs strive to consistently update technology and improve equipment.

Simulation Mannequins Help Develop Nursing Skills

Students in the Hunt School of Nursing use a variety of technology including low-fidelity simulation mannequins for practicing fundamental medical skills before progressing to more complex situations. Hunt School of Nursing Director and Associate Professor Dr. Anna S. Hamrick along with her faculty and staff have a goal to replace all 16 of the school鈥檚 low-fidelity mannequins. 鈥淲e have secured funding for 10 of the 16 from the operating budget and other grants, and we are hopeful that gifts on Double Dawg Day may assist towards the last six this year,鈥 she informed.

Simulation using mannequins allow students to develop their skills and practice procedures in a safe environment. It is a financial investment to maintain the latest technology. Hamrick noted that the cost is approximately $18,000 per low-fidelity mannequin.

Simulation Coordinator and Nursing Instructor Tara R. Hayes noted her gratitude to donors for their continuing support. “Thank you; we truly cannot express how crucial this equipment is to our everyday work educating future nurses,” she acknowledged. “The mannequins and other equipment play a pivotal role in ensuring our students receive the highest-quality education and hands-on experience to produce the next generation of Bulldog Nurses. From assessing lung sounds to learning to apply advanced cardiac treatment therapies, our students are engaging in realistic, immersive simulations, and for providing that opportunity, we are forever grateful to you!”

Senior nursing student Brianna Payne listens to
a mannequin’s heartbeat.

David Moore, a student in the Associate of Science in Nursing program who graduates in May 2026, said the simulation and skills development play a crucial role in his education. 鈥淭he mannequins enable us to practice a wide range of skills, from basic tasks like taking vital signs to complex procedures like administering medications or performing CPR,鈥 Moore noted. 鈥淲e also learn to assess patients, interpret data, and make informed decisions.鈥

Amber Baker is in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and will graduate in May. 鈥淭he simulation mannequins are important to my learning experience because they allow me to develop nursing judgement,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭he simulation mannequins can be set to deliver certain cues that real life patients can exhibit. With those cues, I can try an intervention to see if it will work, and if it doesn’t, it still allows me to grow from the experience. The simulation mannequins also provide a real-life experience by being able to talk, have alternating vital signs, give birth, etc. So, it allows me to take what I learned in class and apply it with the simulation mannequins, so that I am learning in different styles.鈥

Baker added that the mannequins can generate a heart rhythm, vital signs, breath sounds, etc. 鈥淲e have parts of simulation mannequins that allow us to give IV’s or draw blood if needed or to deal with anything that needs to be inserted into the mannequin,鈥 she elaborated.

Both Baker and Moore are grateful to 国产哟哟 donors who contribute to their education by helping purchase the mannequin simulators. Baker affirmed, 鈥淚 would also tell them that not only are they helping nursing students, but they are also helping change patients’ lives by ensuring that student nurses are educated and well equipped to handle real-time world scenarios.鈥

Moore expressed, 鈥淚 personally want to thank each and every donor for helping us in our journey through nursing school.鈥

Human Performance Equipment Helps Students Apply Exercise Science Theories

For students in the Department of Exercise Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Jonathan Ahearn will use donations from Double Dawg Day to purchase a new metabolic cart, which is $20,000. 鈥淎 metabolic cart is a device used to measure oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production to assess an individual鈥檚 cardiorespiratory function and fuel utilization during different modes of physical activity, providing insights into energy expenditure and cardiorespiratory fitness,鈥 Ahearn described. 鈥淥ur students use these carts on a daily basis to learn how to assess clients, including special populations, to enhance their health status and overall quality of life. In most competitor programs, all students do not get the opportunity to use such equipment, but all our students get hands-on training with this equipment in multiple courses across our curriculum.鈥

The department needs two carts, and future donations on Double Dawg Day will help buy the second one. Ahearn would also like to raise funds to buy four new cycle ergometers, which make assessments to achieve peak performance. These machines cost $6,000 each and are integral to the program鈥攗sed in labs, practical exams and service-learning projects鈥攁llowing students to apply the theories they are learning. 鈥淚f you consider the amount of practice EXSI 310 students complete in preparation for their practicals, these bikes are the most heavily used equipment in lab, outside of desks,鈥 explained Dr. Jeff Hartman, director of the Human Performance Lab. 鈥淭hese bikes would allow students to further develop their applied skills.鈥

The program has other equipment needs, such as two Wingate Test Ergometers used for anaerobic power testing; the BodPod and Body Stat used in body composition assessment labs; and two treadmills that permit inclines greater than 15%, which are necessary for completing the Bruce VO2max treadmill test. These machines cost an estimated total of $40,000. 鈥淰O2max testing is the gold standard assessment for aerobic fitness, meaning these treadmills could and should serve as a foundational piece of equipment for all lab-based courses in EXSI,鈥 Ahearn informed. 鈥淚n addition, their functionality means they will serve as a cornerstone of all service-orientated experiences focused on community wellness assessment.鈥

He noted the equipment will replace older items and provide new opportunities to enhance student skill acquisition within the human performance and exercise science field. Ahearn observed, 鈥淭hese experiences are gamechangers as the students are rigorously prepared for internships and employment within the field.鈥

Allyson Butts earned her bachelor鈥檚 in exercise science in 2023 and her master鈥檚 in strength and conditioning in 2024 from 国产哟哟. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist via the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Butts is employed as the lead strength coach at Architech Sports & Physical Therapy in Charlotte, N.C. She noted how essential this equipment is to applying and developing assessment skills. 鈥湽从’s exercise science program did an excellent job providing me with a robust knowledge of the field,鈥 she praised. 鈥淚 learned strength and conditioning principles and developed programming and coaching skills, but I also learned to see exercise through the lenses of exercise physiology, motor behavior, motor learning, psychology, and sociology. I left knowing how to make evidence-based decisions on exercise for athletes of all ages and levels of skill.鈥

Four Graduates of Master鈥檚 Program Join a Small Percentage of Women Employed in Top-Level Positions

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擨n a field dominated by men, four recent 国产哟哟 alumnae are changing perceptions and gaining respect. As graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Master of Science in Strength and Conditioning (S&C) programs at 国产哟哟, they join the small percentage of women in America who are employed in top-level S&C jobs.

The 鈥淚nternational Sport Coaching Journal鈥 published an article in January 2022 that stated the importance of S&C to athletic preparation and prevention of injuries. The article, 鈥淓xperiences and Perceptions of Women S&C Coaches: A Scoping Review,鈥 citing the most recent statistics, also noted that within the NCAA Division I鈥攃onsidered the highest level of intercollegiate athletics in the United States鈥攐nly 15.7% of employed S&C coaches are women.

The 国产哟哟 trailblazers are:

  • Caitie Mayo, 鈥21 and 鈥22鈥擜thletic Performance Coach or Olympic Sports at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
  • Kristen Flateau, 鈥22 and 鈥23鈥擜ssistant Director for Speed, Strength and Conditioning at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.
  • Allyson Butts, 鈥23 and 鈥24鈥擫ead strength coach at Architech Sports & Physical Therapy in Charlotte, N.C.
  • Macy Falls, 鈥24鈥擲ports Performance Coach at TopTeam Sports Performance in Charlotte.
Before taking her job at Baylor University in Texas, Caitie Mayo worked in the National Football League and Major League Soccer.

Mayo played volleyball at 国产哟哟 and received her master鈥檚 degree in 2022. She was a graduate assistant and strength and conditioning intern at 国产哟哟 and worked as an athletic performance coach at Architech Sports and Physical Therapy. She was a sports performance coach/sports scientist for Charlotte FC Academy before obtaining her job at Baylor, where she prepares the athletes for the demands of their sport through weightlifting, conditioning, and recovery. Mayo stated, 鈥淭o provide holistic care to our athletes, it is critical for the departments of strength and conditioning, nutrition, and athletic medicine to communicate effectively. The exercise science program played a key role in my development as a professional in learning how to collaborate, communicate, and most importantly, provide a high level of training for each student-athlete.鈥

She has worked in the National Football League and Major League Soccer鈥攂oth sports are highly dominated by men. 鈥淭hrough that, I have learned that authenticity is the key to success,鈥 Mayo acknowledged. 鈥淲e do not need to 鈥榓ct like a man鈥 or try to 鈥榓ct tough.鈥 We can demand respect through the quality of our work and consistently holding ourselves and our athletes to the highest standard. We will be challenged and asked why more often, however over time, my work and professionalism will speak for itself. Instead of taking offense, I take that as a challenge and embrace the opportunity to put intention behind every program I write and every drill I coach. I have been blessed to work in environments where I am treated with the utmost respect.鈥

When Flateau began working in S&C, she worked with football teams at GWU, Elon and Coastal Carolina. 鈥淎s a female, I definitely had to prove myself to the players and coaching staff,鈥 she shared. 鈥淚 had to prove to the athletes that I was able to do the movements. I knew how to do them and that I knew different things about football. There were times where I had to be OK with being uncomfortable and not being afraid of embarrassing myself while doing a movement or an exercise to prove to the team that I could do it even as a young female working football. Once the players knew I was as bought into the program as they were, they treated me as the coach that I was and gave me the respect they gave everyone else.鈥

She said her 国产哟哟 professors and the program鈥檚 curriculum prepared her for the unique situations she has faced. Because the Department of Exercise Science faculty have backgrounds in teaching, athletic training, and nutrition, Flateau received a well-rounded education. Students also benefit from the expertise of Assistant Professor of Exercise Science Dr. Jonathan Ahearn, who has a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

Kristen Flateau, “Coach K”

鈥淭he 国产哟哟 exercise science program went above and beyond preparing me for success, from learning how to talk to an athlete and building a comprehensive training program to writing professional emails,鈥 Flateau affirmed. 鈥淭he professors at Gardner Webb prepared me with a rigorous curriculum that gave me an extensive knowledge of different areas of health and fitness. I can use what I learned in the strength and conditioning program, combined with the knowledge Dr. Ahearn provided on physical therapy, to help my athletes before an injury occurs.鈥

Falls realized the importance of S&C after she experienced a shoulder injury in college. 鈥淎fter undergoing surgery and months of rehabilitation, doctors鈥 appointments, and many check ins, I realized there was a disconnect between what my surgeon, physical therapist, and team athletic trainer were saying,鈥 she related. 鈥淭he lack of communication due to Covid also did not help. The concept 鈥榬eturn to play鈥 was thrown around, however it still felt like proper steps were unclear. I was inspired to enter the S&C field, because I truly believe this field is one of the most often overlooked, yet necessary, areas of sport performance and overall well-being. We serve as what I would have considered to be the 鈥榗onnection鈥 between my surgery and proper preparation to return to the sport I loved. I wanted to inspire others to become their best selves both mentally and physically. I wanted to truly make a difference in the lives of young athletes.鈥

Macy Falls works with an athlete at TopTeam Sports Performance in Charlotte, N.C.

The master鈥檚 program at 国产哟哟 prepared her to face challenges, learn lessons and gain many new skills. In her job at TopTeam Sports Performance, Falls has a supportive team who pushes her to lead with confidence in a field dominated by men. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 necessarily think I鈥檝e had to prove myself to anyone other than myself,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淎ny doubt that I鈥檝e received firsthand typically goes away after pride has been set aside, so I think that the main thing for me is just being confident in myself and trusting in God鈥檚 plan for my life.鈥

Allyson Butts

Besides being a female in the male-dominated field, Butts also doesn鈥檛 have a strong athletic background. Her experience includes a year of playing soccer and two years running cross country. 鈥淚 went into college thinking I wanted to pursue a career in rehabilitative healthcare, specifically physical therapy,鈥 she explained. 鈥淒uring my time at 国产哟哟, I took several classes with Dr. Jonathan Ahearn, and his emphasis on the connection between S&C and the physical therapy field sparked my interest. I love the science of movement, but I also love that strength coaches have the opportunity to build transformative relationships with their athletes. For me, the S&C field combines the science I love with an opportunity to encourage my athletes to succeed on and off the field.鈥

国产哟哟鈥檚 program gave her the knowledge she needed to enter the field but went a step further. 鈥淭he program did an excellent job giving me connections I would need to find my first role,鈥 she assessed. 鈥淢y first internship was with the company where I currently work, Architech Sports and Physical Therapy. I also completed practicum experiences in a physical therapy clinic, CrossFit gym, and high school strength programs, which helped me expand my skill set.鈥

As the lead strength coach at Architech, she manages all aspects of the strength program for developmental athletes, ages 9 through college. 鈥淭his includes designing and managing programs for athletes at my location, coaching speed and agility technique sessions, and programming mobility, injury prevention, and corrective exercises,鈥 Butts offered.  鈥淪ince we are an integrated performance and physical therapy clinic, I also get to work closely with the physical therapists, specifically with coaching athletes through return to sport activities, designing maintenance programs for injured athletes, and conducting performance/asymmetry analyses using our force plates.鈥

Butts appreciates the S&C opportunities that are beginning to open up for women. 鈥淥ne of the exciting things about being a female strength coach in this decade is that across the board, women are playing a larger role in organized sport, from smaller private programs like Architech to professional sports organizations,鈥 she acknowledged. 鈥淜nowing strong female coaches, either by personal connection or through their research, teaching, and social media, gave me the confidence that this was a world I could succeed in. In my experience, all athletes want to improve, from a 7-year-old female gymnast to a pro NFL tight end (real athletes I’ve coached). They don’t care about my age, appearance, athletic history, or gender, because I am able to provide excellent, evidence-based training and demonstrate care for them as individuals.鈥

High School Students Explore Branches of Science in the Lab and On the Job

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 11 high school students who recently attended the Science Academy at 国产哟哟 experienced a variety of hands-on activities in five days. The camp introduced them to biotechnology, forensics, physician assistant studies, physiology, chemistry, and exercise science. They also toured Rutherford County (N.C.) Sheriff鈥檚 Forensics Department, Cohesion Phenomics, a DNA lab in Spindale, N.C., and Rutherford Regional Health System.

A grant from the Stonecutter Foundation in Rutherford County helps keep the cost down for participants. Instructors are Assistant Professor of Biology Jay Zimmer and Jill Francis, instructional coach for Rutherford County Schools and a former teacher at Chase High School. This year, they were assisted by GWU alumna Haley Bright and Katie Vassey, a recent graduate of Rutherford Early College High School in Spindale, N.C.

Vassey plans to attend 国产哟哟 in the fall and major in biology with a biomedical sciences concentration. She participated in the camp last year, and because she learned so much, she contacted Zimmer early in the year to ask if she could volunteer this summer. 鈥淚 loved all the parts of it, especially the biological side of things,鈥 she noted. 鈥淚 like the microscopes and the electrophoresis.鈥

Helping mentor the students gave Vassey a deeper appreciation of the work that Zimmer and Francis put into providing the summer experience. 鈥淚t鈥檚 incredible what they do,鈥 she praised.

Bright, of Claremont, N.C., graduated from 国产哟哟 in 2022 and has helped with the Science Academy in the past. Her full-time job as a medical assistant takes her away from a lab setting, so she enjoys using her vacation days to help students with the activities and set up the equipment.

Jane Gonzales, a senior at Rutherford Early College High School in Spindale, N.C., decided to attend this summer to explore different STEM careers. One of her favorite events of the week was learning about the Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies at 国产哟哟.

The ninth- through 11th-grade students who attended have career goals related to science. The majority want to work in the medical field: anesthesiologist, nurse, oncologist, pharmacist, paramedic, pediatric nurse, sports medicine, and psychologist. One wants to be in law enforcement.

Maddyn Bright, a student at the Master鈥檚 Academy in Forest City, N.C., enjoyed learning more about the branches of science and how they are used in forensics, biotechnology and healthcare. While she talked, the other students at her table were examining hair under a microscope to determine who killed the butterflies in the fictional case they were working to solve.

Grant Roberts also attends the Master鈥檚 Academy. While he also liked the hands-on activities, his main reason for coming was to learn more about the PA program. 鈥淚 found out a lot of information that was good for me to know,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t helped me, and the teachers gave me their emails to talk to them, to ask questions.鈥

Members Connect with Families, Help Provide Medical Care and Education

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擪udvumisa means 鈥渢o praise鈥 in the language of the people in Eswatini/Swaziland. It鈥檚 also the name chosen by Kudvumisa Foundation, an organization that provides medical clinics to people in this African county where medical care is lacking and HIV/Aids is prevalent.

After spending a week helping in the medical clinics, meeting the people, and worshiping with them, a mission team coordinated by the Office of Christian Life and Service at 国产哟哟 came to realize the name鈥檚 significance. One of the group鈥檚 leaders, Stacy Simmons, associate minister to the University for Pastoral Care, described the experience. 鈥淲e sang worship songs in another language,鈥 she shared. 鈥淚 could see girls of all ages lift their hands praising God and a few of our team members in tears. It鈥檚 incredible to hear a song in another language and to know that the presence of God was there. It鈥檚 amazing when we encounter the same God they worship, thousands of miles away on a different continent.鈥

The Kudvumisa Foundation has been working in the country for 15 years. Through the help of generous donors and volunteers, the non-profit organization has built two clinics and maintains a mobile outreach van. The Foundation鈥檚 missionaries constantly strive to increase the number of families they serve.

Team member Grace Fort, a junior nursing student, describe the trip as a 鈥淕od-given blessing.鈥 She reflected, 鈥淚t was an amazing and joyful experience. I learned so much from the nurses we had the opportunity to shadow at the Kudvumisa Clinic. They taught me how the nurse-and-patient relationship works, and I learned more about how assessing, diagnosing, and prescribing works in the medical field. I also learned a lot from hanging out with the people there. I thoroughly enjoyed going to the kids’ club and hanging out and playing games with the kids. They were so filled with joy and so much fun to hang out with. The people are some of the most welcoming I have ever met in my life. They reminded me how no matter what life brings, there is still joy in the Lord.鈥

The 国产哟哟 team spent their mornings in the clinic and did outreach projects in the afternoons. They helped with a children鈥檚 ministry, played soccer and other games with the kids, delivered food to homes, met with the teen club and a Days for Girls group. Days for Girls is a separate international non-profit ministry that provides education and hygiene products to teens and young women.

鈥淭he people we worked with embraced our team with open arms,鈥 Simmons observed. 鈥淚t was a wonderful experience for the ladies to go and serve in a different part of the world. It鈥檚 great when a team can come back changed from an experience like this 鈥 to see what it鈥檚 like in another country other than our own.鈥

The Foundation鈥檚 medical team also left a lasting impression on 国产哟哟 student Kyndal Jackson. 鈥淢edical treatment may look a little different depending on where you go, but the passion and servant heart that medical providers possess is universal,鈥 she related. 鈥淭he devotion and compassion of the providers were very evident in Eswatini, and I hope to be able to reciprocate this attitude as an aspiring Physician Assistant.鈥

Jackson learned how to give injections and enjoyed interacting with the Eswatini children and teaching the young women about healthy living. She was grateful for the friendships she developed with the other team members and excited for the opportunity to go on a safari. 鈥淭hank you to those who donated and prayed for us,鈥 she stated. 鈥淭hey were felt and greatly appreciated.鈥
