��ӴӴ Band Presents Preview of ‘Viva La Diva’ with Chart-topping Hits and Bold Visuals

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The ��ӴӴ Marching Bulldogs are excited to step into the spotlight with a halftime show that features some of today’s biggest hits. Band members started working on the show in August, arriving to campus two weeks before the start of classes to learn the music and their drill.

They will be performing at the first home game on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., which is during Family Weekend. It’s a red-out game (wear your GWU red) with the Dawgs vs. The Citadel.

Director of Bands Dr. Sarah Fabian, assistant professor of music, said the first performance is a preview of what’s to come. “This year’s show is titled ‘Viva La Diva,’ featuring music by pop powerhouses Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan,” she described. “For this performance, we’ll be showcasing some of today’s biggest hits, including: ‘Abracadabra,’ ‘Espresso,’ and Pink Pony.”

Fabian added, “Get ready for high energy, bold visuals, and major diva vibes and stay tuned as we unveil more of the full production throughout the season!”

Raniyah Adams, of Bessemer City, N.C., is the new drum major. She auditioned for the position by submitting a video of herself conducting and then presenting an in-person teaching segment and conducting the national anthem and other songs. A computer information systems major, Adams has been a member of the Marching Bulldogs for three years. “I am truly honored and excited to have been selected as drum major, and I look forward to stepping into this role with pride and dedication,” she affirmed. “So far, this year has taught me so much about what it means to be a leader. I’ve grown not only as a drum major, developing my skills and confidence on the podium, but also as someone who can guide, motivate, and support others. Every challenge and rehearsal have pushed me to be stronger, more patient, and more determined.”

Her favorite part of this year’s halftime show is the opener. “It has a little bit of a rock feel and very upbeat,” she observed. “I believe fans are going to enjoy this show. We’re playing some very popular songs by very popular artists that are topping the music charts. I hope it encourages everyone to sing and dance during our performances.”

She continued, “Every time I step onto the field, I feel a rush of excitement. I think about all the hours of hard work it took to get to that moment, and I can’t help but picture my family in the crowd. More than anything, I just want to give it my all and make the people I love proud.”

Makenzie Harris, of Bessemer City, is the drumline section leader. She also likes the upbeat opening movement. A biology major with a biomedical science concentration, she has been a member of the band for four years. “I think the fans will be super excited about this show as we are playing new hit songs,” she asserted. “Our student section will appreciate our second movement a lot, I believe.”

Harris said she loved learning the show with the band members, and especially those in her section. “They make me so proud to be a section leader,” she praised. “I am super excited for my senior year. When I take the field, I think about how far I have come since I was a marcher in my freshman year of high school, and I feel so proud of myself. I am motivated to make every performance amazing, and I perform each time like it is my last.”

The colorguard section leader, Kaselynn Mitchell, of Woodstock, Ga., believes that the show is exceptional because the musicians, guard, and dance section have worked many hours to become a cohesive group. “The best part of the show this year is the unity across every section of the band, which really shines through in our performance,” she explained. “The color guard choreography adds to that sense of connection because it matches the music so well and helps bring the entire show to life.”

On game day, Mitchell feels confident and grateful. “I’m truly blessed to have the opportunity to walk onto the field surrounded by my band family and share with the audience what we’ve worked so hard to perfect,” she stated. “The moment the band begins playing, all my nerves disappear, and I feel completely carried by the music as I put my heart and soul into every movement of the choreography. My love for performing motivates me to give my best effort each time, and I’m also driven by the joy of connecting with both the audience and my teammates.”

Mitchell added, “One of the biggest things I’ve learned this year in marching band and color guard is how much I value the leadership team we have. I love the way we work together because everyone brings their own strengths, and we support each other to make the whole band stronger. Being part of such a collaborative and encouraging group has taught me how important strong leadership and teamwork are to our success.”

Assistant Professor Receives Faculty Rising Star Award for Excellence in Scholarship, Teaching and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Through her enthusiasm and engaging personality, Dr. Sarah Fabian, director of ��ӴӴ Bands and assistant professor of music, has tremendously grown the music program. From recruitment efforts at the local high schools to connecting with directors, Fabian has increased interest and participation in the marching band.

She hosts game day and alumni events for the Department of Music and provides opportunities for potential students to experience life on campus. Additionally, she has improved campus life by elevating the fan experience at the football and basketball games with her inventive and creative ideas.

Fabian was recognized for her work with the 2024 Rising Star Award, presented to the faculty members for excellence in scholarship, teaching and service. Those who nominated her stated that Fabian fosters important bonds with her students and inspires them to achieve their goals both inside and outside the classroom. She also motivates her students to unlock their potential and helps them realize their true talents and abilities.

“It is truly an honor to be awarded the Rising Star Award,” Fabian beamed. “It means not only the students, but my colleagues see my efforts and dedication to the betterment of my courses, scholarly work, and service I have been putting into the University.”

She received a bachelor’s degree in music education with a concentration in percussion from Towson University and a master’s degree in music education from John Hopkins Peabody Conservatory, both in Maryland. She earned her Ph.D. in music education from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Growing up in Baltimore, Md., in a family of musicians, Fabian was destined to find her way into the musical world. Her father was a professional jazz pianist and her mother an opera singer. “I started playing piano before I could walk, and it continued from there,” Fabian shared. “I enjoyed playing and performing with my friends. When I started to excel and was winning competitions and events, I was hooked.”

She applied for the ��ӴӴ band director position in 2022 because of her fond memories of being on the University’s campus while training with the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps. A 2009 alumna of the Corps, Fabian has participated in numerous opportunities across the United States to teach drum corps, indoor groups and high schools.

“I am so passionate about music because of my experiences and educators who inspired me, and I want to share that same experience for my students,” Fabian affirmed. “I believe that I have a purpose to guide my students towards a lifelong connection and interest in music. At the heart of teaching is care, support, and encouragement towards the learner.”

As an educator, Fabian’s priorities are serving as a mentor, cheerleader, coach, counselor and facilitator for her students. She spends many hours a week working on recruiting new students while providing for her GWU students by constantly searching for innovative ways to engage and involve students in her courses. She works daily to present her students with new experiences and lifelong memories by hosting events, giving them gifts, providing travel opportunities, and more. “My interactions with my students are the most rewarding parts of my job,” she asserted. “They truly make being at ��ӴӴ a wonderful experience.”

Her teaching is focused on building a foundation of excellence, responsibility and respect. She advocates for fostering a warm and welcoming environment for students and fellow colleagues. “I believe that the interactions you have with your students both in and outside of the classroom allow for better work commitment and progress,” she emphasized. “I find that if you are invested in a person and show trust and respect, they tend to work harder towards the overall goal. I think it is important to build that type of bond and respect throughout the program.”

Looking to the future, Fabian’s personal goals are to pursue her scholarly work along with opportunities for guest conducting and performing to keep her knowledge updated and relevant. Networking on behalf of the University is another priority. “I strive to spread the ��ӴӴ name to the music world,” she shared. “I want to continue to inspire my students for excellence and raise the bar of our performance abilities.”

��ӴӴ Marching Bulldogs Only University Band Selected to Perform in Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade on Nov. 27

Audience Includes 100K Spectators in Uptown Charlotte, N.C., and Over a Million Television Viewers

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The ��ӴӴ Marching Bulldogs earned a coveted spot in the 78th annual Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade on Nov. 27. They are the only university band chosen to perform, and they have the honor of being the first marching band in the parade lineup.

“We are thrilled to announce that the Marching Bulldogs have been selected to participate,” asserted Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Sarah Fabian. “It is a profound honor to represent ��ӴӴ and to embrace the spirit of giving, family, and community. This monumental occasion allows us to showcase our talents live on television before an audience of over 1 million viewers, with more than 100,000 spectators in attendance.”

Hundreds of bands apply for the annual Thanksgiving Eve Parade with the application process beginning in early summer. Since becoming director in 2022, Fabian has been impressed with the Marching Bulldogs’ growth in musicianship and skill. She felt confident in submitting the application, which included a performance video, before the group even started practicing in August.

Once the new and returning band members arrived on campus and went to work learning their new show, Fabian was impressed with their dedication. The group quickly became a cohesive unit and she felt sure they would receive an invite to the parade.

“The Marching Bulldogs truly embody a sense of family, and there’s no better way to spend Thanksgiving Eve than together in celebration,” Fabian emphasized. “We can’t wait to share this unforgettable experience with everyone.”

The parade will step-off at 5:45 p.m. and air live on WCCB on Nov. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will take place on Tryon Street, beginning at the intersection with 9th Street and ending at the intersection with Good Samaritan Way. Free viewing spots can be found from 9th to Brooklyn Village Avenue.

The performance viewing area is located from Brooklyn Village Avenue to Good Samaritan Way, and VIP seating is available in this area for $35. Learn more about the parade .

Along the parade route, the Marching Bulldogs will play “Angels on Parade,” a medley of Christmas classics. In the performance area, they will present “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars from their 2024 Fall halftime show.

Kaselynn Mitchell, of Woodstock, Ga., an exercise science, pre-professional concentration major, likes the music Fabian has chosen. “I enjoy the fast tempo and the upbeat energy the song creates for the band members and the audience,” she noted.

Mitchell started “spinning” 14 years ago as a sixth-grader in winter guard. Mitchell credits her participation in color guard with boosting her confidence and self-esteem. “I have a great passion for performing and expressing my emotions through music,” she affirmed. “I am super excited to have the opportunity to be on TV and be able to share our talents for this special holiday. Being in the marching band has allowed me to gain a second family while letting me continue to keep up with my skills and learn more at every rehearsal.”

She values Fabian’s leadership. “Dr. Fabian is truly the light of the GWU band program,” Mitchell praised. “She is constantly finding new opportunities for us to go to more games, parades, high schools, and other events to spread GWU spirit and our love for band. Dr. Fabian is the center of our marching band and has spent countless hours building and growing the marching band program. She is actively engaged with every section and without her strong leadership skills, our marching band would not be where it is today.”

Raniyah Adams, of Bessemer City, N.C., described her excitement when she heard the Marching Bulldogs were chosen to participate in the annual Charlotte tradition. “It truly feels magical, a once-in-a-lifetime moment,” observed the clarinet player. “I love being in the marching band for the amazing opportunities we have and the long-term friendships and family I get to be with every day. Marching band will always have a place in my heart.”

A computer information systems major, Adams has played her instrument for nine years and started marching six years ago. She appreciates Fabian’s dedication to ��ӴӴ’s program. “Dr. Fabian is so welcoming and supportive of us,” Adams stated. “She has transformed our program’s positivity and engagement, as well as our creativity.”

Weekend Includes Parade, Bo’s Battle Que, Hall of Fame Gala and Worship at the Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—��ӴӴ is honored to have the U.S. Army Golden Knights perform at 1 p.m. before the Homecoming Game. The team will bring down the game ball in their parachute jump in time for kickoff at 1:30, when the Runnin’ Bulldogs take on Lindenwood.

Homecoming at ��ӴӴ is a chance to reconnect with classmates and friends, reminisce about classes and social events, and explore what’s new on campus. For students, Homecoming celebrates what it means to be a Runnin’ Bulldog.

Director of Alumni Relations Leah Clevenger explained the significance of the event. “Homecoming isn’t just one day anymore,” she noted. “We now have a full weekend of events that are fun family traditions. We hope alumni, families, and friends of the University will create Homecoming ‘24 memories by making plans to be a part of the activities offered Oct. 18-20.”

Highlights of the weekend include the parade and football, Bo’s Battle Que, the Athletics Hall of Fame Gala, and a barbecue lunch.

Winners Recognized in 2024 Faculty Assembly

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The ��ӴӴ 2024 Faculty Assembly opens the academic year by introducing new faculty and celebrating the achievements of returning colleagues. President Dr. William M. Downs began the program with his welcome.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Karen Aubrey recognized winners of the various faculty awards. Nominated by their peers, the recipients were selected by the Faculty Development of Instruction and Improvement Committee (FDIIC).

Dean of the Gayle Bolt Price School of Graduate Studies Dr. Sydney Brown presented the graduate faculty awards. Nominations are accepted from faculty and students throughout the academic year. Academic deans are asked to provide additional information on nominees. The Graduate Council Awards Committee selects the recipients. Recipients present as part of Online Faculty Learning Day.

Excellence in Teaching Award

Dr. Ivelina “Iva” Naydenova, chair and professor in the Department of Psychological Science

Presented by Downs, this honor is awarded each year to an exceptional faculty member, who has at least five years of full-time teaching service to GWU and has shown academic rigor, effective course design, and dedication to students.

Naydenova started her career at ��ӴӴ nearly 15 years ago and has grown to be a tenured professor. She has thrived at GWU to become an accomplished teacher, mentor and scholar. Read more, here.

Rising Star Award

Dr. Sarah Fabian, Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music

This award is given to a full-time faculty member employed five or fewer years at ��ӴӴ. Eligible faculty demonstrate excellence, or promise of excellence, in scholarship, teaching, and service.

Fabian was nominated for her standards of excellence. She inspires her students to achieve something greater and helps them to be able to achieve those goals. She develops a connection with her students that makes them want to attend her classes and events. Fabian is constantly interacting with potential students to provide opportunities for them to experience what life at ��ӴӴ is all about. She has made her mark on campus life by setting the tone for all football and basketball games, elevating the fan experience with new and inventive ideas that heighten the game day experience. Fabian’s dedication to growing the music program through local high school recruiting, connecting with directors, hosting game day and alumni events keeps the standards of excellence alive in ��ӴӴ’s instrumental programs.

Faculty Service Award

Dr. Lorell Gordon, Assistant Professor School of Psychological Science and Counselor Education

This award encompasses any excellence in service by a full-time faculty member to the University, a school, or a department.

Gordon has been an asset to growth in her department. She is a valued by her colleagues and students and is recognized for her vision, hard work, and innovative thinking in working across credit and non-credit domains for the betterment of ��ӴӴ. She has been instrumental in the development and implementation of a new concentration in her department, whose first graduates will complete the concentration this year. Gordon has chaired several search committees for eligible new hires on both the main campus and Charlotte campus. She has volunteered her time soliciting and obtaining approval for continuing education credits for mental health counselors to obtain through our PACE program.

In addition to her volunteer service at the University, Gordon also volunteers her time providing counseling for veterans, active-duty military and their families through the American Red Cross. Gordon is a Navy Reserve veteran and the president for the Military and Government Counseling Association of North Carolina. One colleague stated, “She truly represents the best of what we look for here at ��ӴӴ.”

Mentoring and Academic Advising Award

Lisa Brummett, Instructor of Health Sport and Physical Education

This award encompasses excellence in mentoring, advising, out-of-class support, encouragement, and collaboration on student research projects by a full-time faculty member.

Brummett has a heart for students and is committed to giving back to her community and discipline through mentorship and advising. She exhibits intentionality, which is at the core of her teaching. Her love of learning and teaching is truly contagious. Her authenticity is paramount to the success of her teaching. Brummett knows every single class her students have taken, when her students are in student teaching, when students will complete the EdTPA, and when students need to take their state required tests. Her graduates have all passed their EdTPA with strong scores and have successfully found teaching positions. Not only is she a strong mentor and advisor to her students, she has also mentored the adjunct instructors in her program making sure that each is successful. One of her students commented, “She is one of the best teachers and mentors that I have had the opportunity of working with. She is incredibly supportive of her students and she always makes sure we have everything we need to be successful in our career.”

Nancy Francis-Gregg Day-Adjunct Award

Brittany Evans

This award recognizes a traditional undergraduate program adjunct, who has made outstanding contributions to the teaching mission of ��ӴӴ.

Evans has faithfully served as an adjunct in the College of Education since 2021 and is joining the faculty full time this semester as a visiting instructor in the Elementary Education Program. She has consistently gone above and beyond in her role. She is, at all times, professional and knowledgeable and is a true asset to students. Evans has stepped up in her role—taking on additional classes and supervising student teaching. Her understanding of literacy and the Science of Reading has been instrumental in helping to redesign the curriculum to support teacher candidates. She was also instrumental in the support of a grant to enhance literacy curriculum and license exams for the College of Education.

Scholarship Faculty Award

Dr. Steven Harmon, Professor of Historical Theology

This award includes excellence in research and/or scholarly contribution to a field by a full-time faculty member.

Harmon has served the University as a full-time faculty member since 2015. He has amassed a wide variety of scholarly research over the last year that has been published and presented. One nominator wrote, “Harmon’s scholarship of record is one that any faculty member at any university in the world would be proud of. He is one of the leading Baptist Theologians alive and working today, and his name and work are recognized throughout the Baptist academic and ecclesial world.”

Adjunct Graduate Faculty Award

Dr. Morgan Blanton

For almost a decade, Blanton has served as an adjunct professor in the EdD in Leadership Studies and EdD in Curriculum and Instruction programs in the College of Education. Her research in the fields of literacy and professional learning, focus on instructional design and reflective practices. One student said, “Dr. Blanton’s encouragement and guidance were invaluable during my duration as an EDCI Doctoral Candidate. As my dissertation chair, she remained a constant source of support to my research.”

Graduate Full-Time Faculty Award

Dr. Steve Gambill, Master of Public Administration

Gambill taught as an adjunct professor for ��ӴӴ for 24 years before joining the faculty full-time five years ago. He has practiced law for 39 years with a focus on representing municipalities and police departments and has also served as a town manager. A nominating student said, “Dr. Gambill exhibits an unwavering dedication to student success, professionalism, and compassionate mentorship. He consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that each student reaches their full potential, fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment.”

��ӴӴ Football Hosts its First Victory Day Celebration on Aug. 17

Head Football Coach Cris Reisert Invites Community to Memorable Evening for Young People with Special Needs

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—��ӴӴ Head Football Coach Cris Reisert is eager to introduce his players and the community to a tradition that he first observed in 2019—Victory Day. Partnering with Cleveland County Special Olympics and North Shelby School, Reisert invites everyone to come out to the celebration on Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Spangler Stadium. The event is free to attend.

“Victory Day is my favorite night of the year!” Reisert affirmed. “I love to see our program embrace our guests for the evening and the impact that is made on both sides. It’s incredible to see the joy and energy of all those involved in the event.”

Victory Day was created in 2010 by a New Jersey cancer survivor as a way to give back to those who supported him during his cancer battle. The event inspired the president of the St. Clair Down Support Group in Michigan to contact a local football coach and expand the concept to focus on those with special needs.

Since then, Victory Day has expanded to several states. Most events are spearheaded by individuals with a desire to celebrate those who are victorious each day, yet may not get recognition.

Pat McDonald, coordinator for Cleveland County Special Olympics, has contacted athletes and signed them up for the event. “They are looking forward to it, and I am really looking forward to it,” she shared.

At Spangler Stadium, young people with special needs will have an opportunity to play football with the GW Runnin’ Bulldogs and cheer with the Bulldog Cheerleaders. Each child will be partnered with a GWU football player or cheerleader who will serve as their mentor for the evening. They will wear a ��ӴӴ game jersey and participate in a number of simulated game-day activities. Each child will have a moment to shine as they score a touchdown and celebrate while the Marching Bulldog Band plays the school fight song. After the game, the children will receive a medal to commemorate their victory.

Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps Returns to ��ӴӴ on May 16

Elite Performers’ Impact Begins on Campus and Travels to 14 States

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Since moving to Boiling Springs in 2022, there’s one question ��ӴӴ Director of Bands Dr. Sarah Fabian expects to be asked in May. Whether she’s walking around her neighborhood or in town, people want to know, “When’s that band getting here?”

As a former member of the group, Fabian knows firsthand the band they are referring to is Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps, a competitive drum corps whose members are age 21 and under. Based out of Fort Mill, S.C., the corps tours the United States every summer performing in Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions. Since 2007, Crown has consistently placed in the world class top six and in 2013 even won the gold medal — and every summer they start with a month of rehearsals at ��ӴӴ.

This year, Crown will be on campus May 16-June 16. “It’s the talk of the town and something exciting that happens here over the summer,” Fabian affirmed. “It’s a big presence on campus and a benefit to watch their high-level skills and abilities.”

In the 17 years that Carolina Crown has held its pre-tour rehearsals at ��ӴӴ, relationships have been built between the musicians and the community. ��ӴӴ President Dr. William M. Downs praised the partnership, “The energy, the precision, the big bold sound … we love that GWU nurtures something so good each and every summer. And as we continue to build enthusiasm around our own resurgent marching band, it helps to have Crown on our field and on full display. Music with a mission has its home at a University on a mission. Welcome back, Carolina Crown!”

Fabian was introduced to ��ӴӴ in 2009 when she toured with Carolina Crown. Because of her memorable experience on campus, she decided to take the position here. Through Crown, Fabian developed ties to drum corps and has worked as a clinician with many Drum Corps and Winter Guard International groups. Two of the instructors for the Marching Bulldogs are also instructors for Carolina Crown. Fabian said the GWU students will volunteer to help Crown in various ways while they are on campus, and they enjoy watching, listening and learning from the rehearsals.

Carolina Crown Director Joe Roach also noted the significance of the organization’s ties to ��ӴӴ. “Each year Crown begins its summer experience bringing 165 performers from all around the country to ��ӴӴ for four weeks of spring training in preparation for our national tour,” he shared. “��ӴӴ is our home away from home. The University and surrounding community are so supportive and welcoming year after year.”

Roach continued, “We are lucky to have a former member of Carolina Crown on faculty at ��ӴӴ. Dr. Sarah Fabian is a great ambassador for the University and continues to be a supportive alumna of the drum corps. Working with her and getting her students involved while we are on campus has been a lot of fun the past couple of years.”

While Crown’s impact is felt on campus and in town through their music and the fans who come to see them rehearse, the drum corps takes a little part of GWU with them on a tour that stops in 14 states.

“��ӴӴ means a lot to the alumni, members and staff of Carolina Crown,” Fabian explained. “Many families, friends, fans, and alumni make their way to ��ӴӴ to support Crown during their Preview show in June. There is even a tradition that takes place during Spring training for anybody who is aging out of the corps to buy GWU T-shirts and gear before they leave on their last tour.”

Another aspect of the Crown organization is their work in communities where they perform. Through Crown Cares, members participate in community outreach programs, music education initiatives, collect shoes and socks for Samaritan’s Feet, and distribute books to children in need.

Crown has commissioned world-renowned composer John Mackey to compose an original piece for their show this season. Performers will have the opportunity to engage with Mackey when he visits this summer. Mackey’s creation will later be arranged as concert band literature to be released in the fall, creating a legacy work that will live on long past finals night.

Before they leave on tour, Crown will present CrownLive in Spangler Stadium on June 15. The box office opens at 6 p.m. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and warmups begin. The live performance starts at 8 p.m. Performances will include features by individual sections of the Corps as well as the full 2024 production. General admission seating is $20 and tickets are available .

Band Adds New Dance Team for 2023

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The ��ӴӴ Marching Bulldogs begins its second season under the direction of Dr. Sarah Fabian, director of Athletic Bands, with new members and a new addition—a seven-member dance team. The 50 band members also include nine color guard and 34 musicians. They started practicing in early August and are eager to perform for football fans.

Connor Settlemyre, a junior music education major, doesn’t mind the 12-hour rehearsal days. “Band camp is where we settle the fundamentals and set the foundation of the whole season,” he observed. “The new people coming in from high school learn how we do things, because everybody does it a little different.”

Hailey Rodden, also a junior music education major, is returning as drum major. She shared that her favorite part of band camp is observing the interactions between members, and seeing the relationships grow with the freshmen.

The show features hits from Demi Lovato, Lizzo and Taylor Swift. “We are excited to see what the season has in store,” Fabian asserted. “The students have made great progress on the show. The new members have been doing a great job.”

Settlemyre, a percussionist, started playing in the sixth grade and was a member of his high school marching band. “This upcoming season will be my fourth year playing quads but my fifth year on a drumline,” he stated. “I absolutely love what the marching band does. It takes everyone giving 100% in order for us to put the best show in front of the audience.”

Fabian noted that new songs will be added to their program throughout the season. “Marching Bulldogs continue to grow and elevate their performances,” she praised. “They strive to bring the light, energy and spirit to all events they attend. We will be traveling to cheer on the football team at the App State (Appalachian State University) game on Sept. 2.”

University Welcomes Alumni and Friends, Honors Hall-of-Famers and Distinguished Alumni

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Homecoming weekend at ��ӴӴ is packed with events to celebrate Bulldog Nation. From Oct. 28-30, the University will host traditional events, along with some new ones. The weekend is packed with opportunities to connect and engage, beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday and ending Sunday afternoon.

Director of Alumni Relations Leah Clevenger, who graduated from GWU in 1998 and 2002 and met her husband, Gabe, at ��ӴӴ, said Homecoming is an opportunity to support her alma mater, reflect, and share. “Homecoming is absolutely my favorite tradition at ��ӴӴ,” she affirmed. “I love it so much because where else can you see friends that you haven’t seen in 20 years. I love being surprised by who shows up and catching up with them—remembering our times here, laughing about it and keeping those stories alive. I love bringing my family back for this particular tradition because it gives my husband and I an opportunity to stroll down memory lane, to walk through the quad and talk about the classes we had and the professors we had. It helps us past down that history and our love for ��ӴӴ to our children.”

Planning and coordinating all of the events takes a lot of hard work and preparation. Vice President for Advancement Nate Evans thanked Clevenger and all of the GWU staff who make sure the campus is ready. “These events give a nod to the past—it’s tradition and it’s a celebration,” he said. “We celebrate the current and all the good things going on now, and we look forward to the future. It’s molding and meshing all those things together for one big celebration. Our alumni are spread far and wide, so this is an opportunity for them to circle a date on their calendar and say, ‘That’s when I’m coming home.’”

Activities begin at 10 a.m. on Friday with a golf tournament at Riverbend YMCA Golf Course to support GWU Baseball. Register here or email Head Coach Jim Chester. On that evening at 6:30, the Hall of Fame Gala will announce and honor the Class of 2022 inductees. This semi-formal event will feature a reception, silent auction, and dinner. Registration for this event is available here, and must be completed by Oct. 24.

On Saturday, tailgating lots will open at sunrise. Then, at 9 a.m., a ground breaking ceremony will be held for the Masters-Melton Indoor Baseball Facility at John Henry Moss Stadium. Bill Masters, whose legacy of giving energized the men’s baseball program gave the lead gift for the facility. Masters passed away on June 25, 2022. He also named the new building in honor of his longtime special friend, Patsy Melton Willis. The remaining funds to complete the project were donated by generous friends, alumni and parents on Double Dawg Day and in recent weeks. The facility offers space where the Diamond Dawgs can continue to practice in any weather.

At 9:30 a.m., the Homecoming Brunch and Awards Ceremony will be held in Tucker Student Center. During this event the Distinguished Alumni of the Year will be announced and honored. Register for the Brunch here. Then, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Bulldog BBQ with Alumni & Friends will be held on the soccer field across from Spangler Stadium. Find the registration for the BBQ here. The deadline to register for both events is Oct. 24.

At noon, the annual Homecoming Parade will begin at the stoplight in Boiling Springs and continue down Main Street before concluding at Spangler Stadium. Participants include the Marching Bulldogs, homecoming court, student groups and Bo the bulldog.

The game begins at 1:30 p.m. with the GW Runnin’ Bulldogs taking on Bryant University in Spangler Stadium. Tickets and parking may be purchased .

On Sunday, Oct. 30, at 10:30 a.m., Worship at The Webb will be held in Dover Chapel. Then, at 1:30 p.m., a women’s soccer alumni match will be held. Register online or email Head Coach Mike Varga.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.–��ӴӴ’s basketball teams will host their 2022 Bulldog Madness event on Thursday, October 20 at 6:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.

Doors open to the public at 5:30 pm and admission is free. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free team poster of each team.

��ӴӴ alumnus Omar Porter will emcee this year’s Madness, with a skills competition, three-point shooting contest and dunk contest among the many on-court activities scheduled for the 2022-2023 Runnin’ Bulldogs. Head coaches ��Ի�� will address the crowd, as ��ӴӴ officially tips off a promising basketball season for both teams.

A new component to this year’s event is a highly anticipated 5-on-5 faculty and staff scrimmage, which will feature several favorite faces from around campus. A tiktok dance contest – 30 seconds for participants to show off their moves for prizes and bragging rights – has also been added to the event schedule for this season.

An opportunity to learn student section cheers and chants from the GWU band and cheer team, as well as fan challenges for three-point shooting and a game of knockout will also be part of the festivities.

Both teams will stick around after the conclusion of Thursday’s fun to sign autographs for children under the age of 12.

Simmons welcomes back four starters from her team that finished 13-5 in the Big South last season and made a run into the semifinals. ��ӴӴ returns a strong 91.1 percent of its scoring and 87.5 percent of its rebounding from a year ago – setting the stage for a run to the front of the Big South Conference pack.

Craft has the Big South Conference’s top frontcourt in big men ��Ի��, a pair of rim protectors who have impressed this preseason. Defending slam dunk champion also returns and is poised for a breakout year. The Runnin’ Bulldogs return eight letter-winners from a team that won 18 games and is expected to compete at the top of the Big South Conference standings again in 2022-2023.��
