国产哟哟 President Nate Evans

国产哟哟 President Nate Evans noted the significance of the event as he welcomed the graduates, their families and friends. 鈥淐ommencement is always one of the most joyful days of the year because it reflects the very heart of our mission: Students pursuing their calling, growing in knowledge and character, and preparing to make a difference in the world,鈥 he asserted. 鈥淎nd so, we gather today to celebrate you鈥nd, perhaps most importantly鈥o honor the promise you carry forward from this moment and this place: the promise of a bright and rewarding future.鈥

Senior Scholastic awards were presented to traditional undergraduates:

Dr. Robert Canoy

The featured speaker was Dr. Robert Canoy, who served as dean of the 国产哟哟 M. Christopher White School of Divinity for 16 years. This semester, he taught part time and will retire on Dec. 31.

Canoy joined the School of Divinity faculty in 2000. Through the years, he led classes in Christian theology, Greek, eschatology, the Revelation of John, and The Ministry of Worship, a Doctor of Ministry seminar. In addition, Canoy regularly led study tours to Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, and Rome.

Canoy鈥檚 primary area of research is New Testament theology, having written articles and books on eschatology, and Eucharistic theology. He is the author of 鈥淎tonement in the Apocalypse: An Expos茅 of the Defeat of Evil.鈥

He served as pastor in Shelby, N.C., Maryland (in the Washington D.C. area), Iowa, Missouri, and Kentucky before returning to an academic career. His teaching experience began at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as a doctoral student and then Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Mo.

Canoy spoke about recognizing and celebrating new beginnings, and he offered examples鈥攆rom biblical characters to historic figures and recent celebrities. 鈥淭he Bible is an honest book filled with 鈥榖egin-again鈥 stories, if I can use that phrase,鈥 Canoy related. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 because life has always been about beginning again, over and over again, since each step that we take leads to the next step. And some steps that we take require some serious recalibration. Truth is, in this life there are no last steps.鈥

He discussed Simon Peter, who had boasted that he would never betray Jesus. 鈥淏ut he denied Jesus, not once, not twice, but three times, which Jesus had predicted,鈥 Canoy observed. 鈥淏ut Peter 鈥榖egan again.鈥 He made a new start on the banks of the Sea of Galilee鈥esus gave him a new beginning, a fresh start, after his past failure.鈥

His list of famous 鈥渄o-overs鈥 included Thomas Edison, who failed more than 100 times before finding a filament that would sustain a light bulb, and Michael Jordan, who was famously cut from his high school basketball team before becoming one of the sport’s greatest players. Canoy ended with the most remarkable 鈥渂egin-againer,鈥 Jesus Christ. 鈥淗e died at 33 before making the first of its kind鈥攖he greatest historical comeback ever鈥攃alled resurrection,鈥 Canoy stated.

Concluding his remarks, Canoy observed, 鈥淕raduation from 国产哟哟 means being prepared for life鈥檚 ups and downs, highs and lows. Today鈥檚 commencement from GWU means that nothing is more important than knowing that God is all about getting us back up when we throw ourselves down or when life knocks us down. So, let us commence today to do even better tomorrow what we may have done well, or not so well yesterday, Pro Deo et Humanitate!鈥

Video of the commencement ceremony is available on The University鈥檚 and channel.

Through the Last 16 Years Under His Leadership, School of Divinity Has Gained Funding for Students; Maintained High Academic Standards

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擠r. Robert Canoy, dean of the 国产哟哟 M. Christopher White School of Divinity for 16 years, will retire at the end of the 2025 Fall Semester. Canoy will serve as a part-time faculty member until Dec. 31, and also offer guidance to Professor Dr. Jim McConnell, who has been named interim dean of the School of Divinity.

鈥淒r. Canoy鈥檚 leadership has shaped the School of Divinity and strengthened 国产哟哟鈥檚 mission for nearly three decades,鈥 shared Interim GWU President Nate Evans. 鈥淗is commitment to preparing ministers, scholars, and servants of the Church has left a lasting mark not only on this institution but also on congregations and communities across the globe. We are deeply grateful for his visionary leadership and steady presence, and we celebrate both the legacy he leaves and the foundation he has built for the future of theological education at 国产哟哟.鈥

Dr. Robert Canoy in 2010

Canoy鈥檚 affiliation with 国产哟哟 began in 1997, shortly after he was called as senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. Invited by Dr. Wayne Stacy, then dean of the School of Divinity, Canoy served as an adjunct faculty member and as an ecclesiastical representative for the school鈥檚 first accreditation self-study. In 2000, Canoy joined the faculty full time as associate dean. When Stacy departed, Canoy stepped into interim leadership, guiding the school through its initial 10-year accreditation, granted in 2004 by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.

In 2005, with the appointment of Dr. Chuck Bugg as dean, Canoy resumed his role as associate dean. After Bugg鈥檚 departure, Canoy once again provided transitional leadership until 2009, when he was named the divinity school鈥檚 fourth dean. Since then, he has led the School of Divinity through two additional accreditation reviews, in 2014 and 2024.

Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters commended Canoy for his exemplary service to the University. 鈥淚 extend heartfelt gratitude to Dean Robert Canoy, whose faithful and visionary leadership has blessed the School of Divinity and 国产哟哟 for many years,鈥 she praised. 鈥淭hroughout his tenure as dean, Dr. Canoy has provided unwavering guidance, steadfast advocacy, and wise counsel. His dedication to faculty, staff, students, and alumni has strengthened and enriched our community.鈥

Dean of the School of Divinity Dr. Robert Canoy speaks during the school’s 20th anniversary.

Waters added, 鈥淚 am especially grateful for his continued presence and influence during the fall semester as he transitions from the role of dean to a part-time administrator and professor, and I appreciate Dr. Jim McConnell鈥檚 willingness to serve as the interim dean. During this transition, we celebrate a legacy of faithfulness and excellence and anticipate the ways it will continue to shape the future of the School of Divinity.鈥

McConnell also praised Canoy鈥檚 skillful leadership of the School of Divinity. 鈥淲hile Dr. Canoy served as dean, the influence of the School of Divinity has spread throughout our region and beyond, including internationally,鈥 McConnell asserted. 鈥淒ean Canoy has maintained our school鈥檚 focus on its mission, 鈥榯he preparation of persons for Christian ministries,鈥 recognizing that God鈥檚 call to ministry in the local church extends to a diverse group of people. I am humbled to follow Dr. Canoy as interim dean of the school. At the same time, I am thankful for the strong foundation on which Dr. Canoy has established the school. Because of his leadership we are well positioned to continue to train men and women for Christian ministries of all types into the future.鈥

Under Canoy鈥檚 guidance, the divinity school has received numerous gifts. An endowment of more than $1 million given in 2006 by Joyce Earnhardt was particularly meaningful, because it allowed divinity school students to study overseas. 鈥淚t allows for students to travel to the Bible lands,鈥 Canoy related. 鈥淚 have been leading those groups for 20-something years. That鈥檚 been a real highlight to watch students go to the Bible places and to connect the Bible with that part of the world for their own preaching and teaching.鈥

Dean Dr. Robert Canoy poses with a graduate at the
Divinity School Recognition Ceremony in 2023.

In addition to trips to Israel, Greece and Turkey, divinity students also have the opportunity to participate in mission immersion trips and have served in Cuba, the Balkans, and Africa. The Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund also helps students pay for their theological education, and other grants to the divinity school support hands-on programs and academic enrichment opportunities. With these funds and assistance provided by the Christian Service Organization, as well as churches from across the nation, divinity students are able to obtain their degree without taking on additional educational debt.

Canoy is thankful for the administrative assistants who have provided stability to the School of Divinity over the years, especially the current assistant, Lisa Hollifield. He also praises the highly-qualified faculty who prepare students from their various areas of expertise in historical theology (Dr. Steven Harmon), missions (Dr. Terry Casino, originally from the Philippines), counseling (Dr. Hebert Palomino from Colombia and Dr. Doug Dickens), New Testament interpretation (McConnell), and biblical studies (Dr. Cal Robertson).

Because of the faculty鈥檚 dedication, 90% of students who want to go into a church-related ministry obtain a position after graduating. In addition, many churches that employ a 国产哟哟 student will contact the divinity school when the student is called to serve elsewhere. 鈥淭hey say, 鈥楶lease send us another one like that,鈥欌 Canoy shared. 鈥淭hat means we鈥檝e done something well.鈥

2024 Dean鈥檚 Scholar Embarks on a Dual-Degree Journey

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜s an undergraduate student at 国产哟哟, Annagrace Earwood鈥檚 favorite memory involves an act of service. She was vice president of the Religious Studies Association and volunteered with members at the Washington Outreach Ministry, a food pantry in Cherryville, N.C.

鈥淲e went one Friday and spent the morning packing and handing out food to those in need,鈥 Earwood stated. 鈥淭his is a very important memory to me, because I was able to serve the local community with my peers. This was truly a blessing.鈥

Earwood sensed God鈥檚 calling on her life when she was a teenager. 鈥淚 know I am called to minister to people in whatever capacity the Lord opens up doors for,鈥 she acknowledged. 鈥淚 especially have a heart for children and believe that I am supposed to minister to them in some way.鈥

Annagrace Earwood preaches at a conference for DreamGirls
Ministry, which is based in Greenville, S.C.

She followed her instinct to help children by volunteering two years with the mission team from the Office of Christian Life and Service that served critically ill children at Give Kids The World Village in Orlando, Fla. In a 国产哟哟 Newscenter story about the trip, Earwood said the children taught her a very important lesson. 鈥淚 learned that there are 5-year-olds out there who are emotionally stronger than I am at 18 years old, simply because they don鈥檛 let their circumstances define them, and even in the unknowns of life, they can find great joy,鈥 she noted.

Earwood is a dual enrollment student in the School of Divinity at 国产哟哟 pursuing a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Religion. She graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Christian studies with a concentration in Discipleship in May 2024. She was recognized at the Student Volunteerism, Service and Leadership Awards Ceremony for her work with the Religious Studies Association.

Annagrace Earwood, second from right, helps pack food bags with other members of the Religious Studies Association.

Earwood is also the recipient of the 2024 Dean鈥檚 Fellowship Scholar Award, given annually by the GWU School of Divinity. Each year, the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy selects a graduate of the program to receive the full-tuition scholarship for the complete course of study in the Master of Divinity degree at 国产哟哟. The recipients, known as 鈥淒ean鈥檚 Fellows,鈥 are chosen for exceptional academic performance and call to ministry.

Although Earwood grew up in Shelby, N.C., and was familiar with 国产哟哟, she didn鈥檛 experience the University for herself until she came for a visit. 鈥淚 felt God’s peace as soon as I came to campus the first time I toured,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淚 have enjoyed everything about my 国产哟哟 experience. I loved my department, my professors, my peers, and my classes. I think what really makes 国产哟哟 home for me is the sense of community that is here, as well as the support by the community to follow the calling God has on my life.鈥

With the support of friends, family and her professors, Earwood has felt confident and prepared for her graduate studies and ministry, especially in the area of discipleship. 鈥淎ll of the professors in the religious studies department are especially meaningful to me,鈥 she affirmed. 鈥淭hey all had a tremendous impact on how I approach theology, ministry, and biblical study. I appreciate them all deeply and do not think they will ever know the extent of their impact on my life.鈥

Annagrace Earwood worked at the Vacation Bible School at Double Shoals Baptist Church.

N.C. Commissioner of Labor Josh Dobson

鈥淚 am honored and excited to be speaking at commencement,鈥 said Dobson, who was sworn in as North Carolina鈥檚 18th labor commissioner on Jan. 2, 2021, after serving eight years in the state House of Representatives. Dobson represented the 85th district covering Avery, McDowell and Mitchell counties located in the western part of the state.

国产哟哟 President Dr. William M. Downs noted, 鈥淚t is appropriate that as we send hundreds of new GWU graduates out into the workforce that we hear from our state鈥檚 Commissioner of Labor. Josh Dobson is a 国产哟哟 product, and he is especially well positioned to speak to the Class of 鈥24 about what lies ahead for them in the world of work. We look forward to having one of our own鈥攁n alumnus who rose to serve in the Council of State鈥攔eturn home and provide remarks at Commencement.鈥

Dobson served as a McDowell County Commissioner from 2010 to 2012 before being appointed in 2013 to the 85th House district seat. Dobson subsequently ran and won re-election to the 85th district seat in 2014, 2016 and 2018. During his time in the Legislature, Dobson served as Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and Chair of the House Health Committee. In 2020, Dobson won a closely contested election for Commissioner of Labor. Dobson is not seeking reelection in 2024, and he will wrap up 14 consecutive years of service in elected office following this November鈥檚 general election.

Dobson earned a Bachelor of Science in social science from Gardner Webb and a Master of Public Administration from Appalachian State University.

The N.C. Department of Labor is charged by statute with promoting the 鈥渉ealth, safety, and general well-being鈥 of more than 5 million workers across the state. Employee safety is Commissioner Dobson鈥檚 top priority.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜manda Tyler, the executive director for the Baptist Joint Committee (BJC) for Religious Liberty will be the featured speaker for the 国产哟哟 School of Divinity鈥檚 Mary Washburn Wilson Lecture Series. The free event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. in Dover Chapel. Tyler鈥檚 topic will be 鈥淗ow to End Christian Nationalism.鈥

Dean of the School of Divinity Dr. Robert Canoy praised the work of Tyler and her predecessors. 鈥淭he Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC) has been blessed with great leadership for many decades,鈥 Canoy noted. 鈥淛ames M. Dunn and J. Brent Walker, leaders since 1981 and 1999 respectively, have been joined by current Executive Director Amanda Tyler since 2017. As an alumna of the University of Texas School of Law, Tyler鈥檚 leadership of the BJC continues its founding focus on religious liberty for all people without which Baptists could easily be silenced in America.鈥

Tyler is also lead organizer of the campaign and co-host of the podcast. As executive director of BJC, Tyler upholds the historic Baptist principle of faith freedom for all. Her constitutional law analysis and advocacy for religious freedom have been featured by major news outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, CBS News, ABC News, CNN, and MSNBC.

In these roles, Canoy further recognized Tyler鈥檚 鈥渆xceptional capacities for looking past short-sighted rhetoric that seems to favor Baptists, but that unfortunately could lead to a loss of Baptist freedoms should others from other backgrounds and beliefs become the majority or more powerful religious voices in America.鈥

He continued, 鈥淎manda Tyler understands that religious freedom for one means religious freedom for everyone. She promotes that message and principle wherever she goes and in everything that she writes.鈥

Religion News Service named Tyler one of 鈥2022鈥檚 rising stars in religion,鈥 and she regularly preaches in Baptist churches, speaks at denominational gatherings, and leads sessions on college campuses and with community groups of all sizes. She testified before Congress in 2022 about the ways in which Christian nationalism proves cover for white supremacy, and in 2018 she spoke about threats to religious liberty around the world.

A member of the Texas and U.S. Supreme Court Bar, she has experience working in Congress, in a private legal practice and serving as a law clerk for a federal judge. Tyler is a graduate of Georgetown University and The University of Texas School of Law.

About the Mary Washburn Wilson Lecture Series

The lectures are supported by the Mary Washburn Wilson Visiting Scholar Endowment, which was established in honor of Mary Leigh Washburn Wilson (1922-2003) through a generous gift by her daughter, Rev. Tillie Duncan, a member of the GWU Gallery of Distinguished Alumni, along with Rev. Duncan’s husband Shannon Duncan. The lectureship is designed to expose students to new ideas and to make them aware of ideas not previously thought about in an intentional way.

More than 500 Graduates Honored for Achievements

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敼从 celebrated the achievements of over 500 students at the University鈥檚 Spring Commencement Ceremony on May 2 in Spangler Stadium. The event honored students in the traditional undergraduate, online, and graduate programs of study. The featured speaker was 国产哟哟 alumna and Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools, Dr. Crystal L. Hill.

国产哟哟 President Dr. William M. Downs offered his congratulations to the graduates as he welcomed their families and guests. 鈥淎rriving at the finish line of your degree program no doubt brings with it a wave of emotions 鈥 satisfaction, gratitude, exultation 鈥 and probably some relief,鈥 he acknowledged. 鈥淲hatever emotion you feel today, I hope you find time to make it a joyful one 鈥 because this truly is a great day to be a 国产哟哟 Runnin鈥 Bulldog.鈥

Among the graduates was Leah Carpenter, of Stanley, N.C., who was named 国产哟哟鈥檚 first Tucker Scholar in 2020. Established in 2019 by Carolyn and the late Robert Tucker, the award includes full-tuition, room and board for eight semesters. The Tuckers created the scholarship to annually recognize a high school senior who exemplifies the principles and values representative of the 国产哟哟 community. The qualifications are based on Mark 12:29-31: 鈥淟ove the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.鈥

Carolyn Tucker, left, and Lisa Tucker celebrated the
graduation of the first Tucker Scholar, Leah Carpenter
(center).

Carolyn Tucker and her daughter, Lisa, a member of the 国产哟哟 Board of Trustees, attended the ceremony to witness Carpenter鈥檚 achievement. Carpenter earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and has accepted a position at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, N.C.

Carpenter reflected on the Tuckers being there to watch her graduate. 鈥淕od has been so faithful and given me so many different blessings that I do not deserve, but I am so grateful to 国产哟哟 for not only helping me achieve my dreams of becoming a nurse but showing me what a true community seeking after Jesus looks like,鈥 she affirmed. 鈥淗aving Carolyn and Lisa Tucker there is again such an honor, and all I want to do is make them proud, which I hope that I have done. They care so much, and I am so grateful to them for everything they have done for me. I will never forget it.鈥

Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott gave the invocation, followed by Board of Trustees Chair Gary Smith, who brought greetings from the board. President of the Student Government Association, Madi Mamoone, shared her thoughts on the significance of the occasion. 鈥淲ith our futures in mind and our plans in motion 鈥 Choose kindness, goodness and love with God in your mind and in your heart,鈥 she acknowledged. 鈥淐lass of 2024, today鈥檚 the day to celebrate you and everything yet to come. Your path is just beginning, and I know it will be bright. Change the world, do big things, and never give up. Congratulations! And for the last time, spread love and Sko鈥 Dawgs!鈥

Hill has more than 25 years of experience in education and became Charlotte-Mecklenburg superintendent on May 19, 2023. She earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership in 2008 from 国产哟哟. As the leader of the second largest school district in North Carolina, Hill鈥檚 decisions impact more than 140,406 students in kindergarten through 12th grade in 181 schools. Hill also serves the Charlotte community as a member of the Leading on Opportunity Council, an entity that helps its partners across Charlotte-Mecklenburg improve economic mobility for all.

Hill urged the 国产哟哟 graduates to face their challenges head on. 鈥淲hen we push ourselves out of our comfort zones and take on new challenges at work or in our personal lives, we often discover hidden strengths and abilities we never knew we had,鈥 Hill affirmed. 鈥淲e come out on the other side of that challenge or difficulty stronger, more resilient, more self-confident, and more prepared for the journey.鈥

Dr. Crystal L. Hill

She offered the graduates three action steps they can take to deal with the challenges that are sure to come: 鈥淏eing prepared for what鈥檚 next in your journey means having a proactive mindset, being adaptable to change, and equipping yourselves with the necessary skills and resources to face whatever comes your way.鈥

During the presentation of awards, the Most Outstanding Graduate Medals were presented to two students in recognition of their outstanding leadership, citizenship, and academic excellence. The 2024 recipient of the Most Outstanding Female Graduate Award was Chelsea Walters, of Connelly Springs, N.C., who received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The 2024 recipient of the Most Outstanding Male Graduate Award was Micah Moulder of Seneca, S.C., who earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and sociology.

It is named in honor of Gravett, long-time dean of the GWU Graduate School and Associate Provost Emerita.

Ebert is a seasoned educator with two decades of experience in exceptional children鈥檚 education. Through her work with Novel Education Group, she provides tailored, in-home learning for students with severe disabilities. New Professor Emerita, Brazilian Native was Introduced to 国产哟哟鈥檚 Campus 50 Years Ago

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜s the procession of 国产哟哟 students and faculty march into Spangler Stadium on Thursday, May 2, the moment will be savored by everyone. For one professor, Dr. Sophia Steibel, the 2024 Commencement Ceremony will mark three significant milestones.

Steibel is retiring after serving the University for 30 years, and she鈥檚 been named Professor Emerita in the M. Christopher White School of Divinity. Most importantly, the Brazilian native will reflect on the impactful day 50 years ago when she arrived on 国产哟哟鈥檚 campus for the first time.

鈥淚 was a student here from 1974-1977, sponsored by the Baptist Men of North Carolina,鈥 Steibel related. 鈥淚 came back to teach in 1994 (20 years later) 鈥 never would I have thought that. I am very grateful for all that I received from 国产哟哟 as a student and as a professor.鈥

Dr. Sophia Steibel at the 2023 School of Divinity Recognition
Ceremony.

When she earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree from 国产哟哟 in 1977, she also received the citizenship award as the female student of the year. Steibel went on to earn her Master of Arts in religious education and her Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. After receiving her master鈥檚 degree, she taught at the Baptist Religious Education Institute in Rio de Janeiro. Then, she taught at the South Brazil Baptist Theological Seminary in Rio de Janeiro after earning her Ph.D. Steibel also served three years as president of Campinas Baptist Theological College, Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Her first position at 国产哟哟 was associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy. In 2001, Steibel joined the School of Divinity faculty. She has taught The Christian Journey, Designing Curriculum, Leadership with Volunteers in the Church, Mission and Ministry, and Administration and Leadership. Steibel coordinated the spiritual formation curriculum for the School of Divinity, and she led annual spirituality retreats for students. Christian education and spiritual formation are Steibel鈥檚 primary areas of research interest.

In 2020, Steibel was named the Bonnie Price Chair for Christian Formation and Leadership. The Chair was established to honor Bonnie Price, long-time School of Divinity friend and supporter, in recognition of her commitment to Christian formation and ministry. Steibel is also active in the life of First Baptist Church of Shelby, N.C.

Steibel is thankful for her years at 国产哟哟. 鈥淎s I said before, this is an institution that forms people to be contributors in society, honoring God and serving humanity,鈥 she shared. 鈥淭he interactions are meaningful, challenging at times, but they all contribute to the formation of a person wholistically. As a learner, I received individualized attention that helped me thrive. Professors like Dr. Tony Eastman and Dr. Alice Cullinan saw that I would be able to perform the learning task to the best of my ability. As a Professor, I tried to follow their lead.  Also, I was embraced by peers who valued my personhood and offered encouragement along the way.鈥

She concluded, 鈥淚 feel privileged for having worked alongside professionals who live out their calling as teachers. Education at 国产哟哟 is a serious business that highlights growth and development in a context of Christian love.鈥
