Funding Strengthens Spaces Where Students 鈥楲ive, Learn, Train and Grow鈥 Across Campus

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜 significant $1.5 million gift from an anonymous donor will support student鈥慺ocused priorities at Gardner鈥慦ebb University. The donor provided flexibility in directing the funds, allowing University leadership to focus on initiatives with immediate and lasting impact on students.

Gardner鈥慦ebb President Nate Evans emphasized that every major project supported by the gift aligns with the University鈥檚 mission and commitment to holistic student development. 鈥淭his gift allows us to invest intentionally in spaces and programs that serve students where they live, learn, train, and grow,鈥 Evans underscored. 鈥淓ach priority reflects our commitment to being a Christ鈥慶entered university that places students at the heart of every decision.鈥

A portion of the gift will fund refurbishments to Myers and Spangler residence halls, including new furniture and upgrades such as flooring, paint, and general improvements. Additional funds will be directed toward targeted student housing improvements across campus. The work will be completed over the summer and will improve the student living experience while supporting an expansion of the University鈥檚 Faith鈥態ased Living鈥慙earning Community, a residential model that intentionally connects students鈥 academic, co鈥慶urricular, and personal development around shared interests and values.

鈥淭his investment in Myers and Spangler represents far more than a facilities upgrade鈥攊t is a direct investment in the student experience at Gardner鈥慦ebb University,鈥 affirmed Vice President of Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley鈥疺illarose. 鈥淲hen we enhance residential spaces, we strengthen the foundation for student success by creating environments where students can rest, study, and build meaningful relationships. Gifts like this elevate not only where our students live, but how they live鈥攕upporting their academic persistence, personal growth, and overall sense of belonging.鈥

Villarose emphasized that the expansion of the Faith鈥態ased Living鈥慙earning Community reflects the University鈥檚 intentional approach to integrating faith and learning within the residential experience.

She added, 鈥淭hese spaces will allow students to engage more deeply in shared values, spiritual development, and meaningful dialogue beyond the classroom. As this living鈥憀earning community continues to expand, we are creating more opportunities for students to connect their academic journey with their faith in a supportive, residential environment.鈥

The philanthropic support will also fund a comprehensive renovation of the primary weight room located in the football center. The project will include new flooring, racks, weights, machines, and branded strength equipment to benefit the health, safety, and performance of student鈥慳thletes across all sports. Additional funds will address football program needs and athletic facility improvements.

Vice President for Athletics and Athletic Director Brendan Fahey described the renovation as 鈥渢ransformational鈥 and a 鈥渢rue program鈥慶hanger鈥 for the department. 鈥淪trength training is essential to the development and well鈥慴eing of our student鈥慳thletes, and this new, state鈥憃f鈥憈he鈥慳rt space will allow us to support them at the highest level,鈥 Fahey explained. 鈥淏eyond enhancing daily training, it will play a key role in recruitment, retention, and the overall student鈥慳thlete experience. We are incredibly grateful for this generous support and look forward to unveiling the new facility to our student鈥慳thletes.鈥

Reflecting the University鈥檚 commitment to developing the whole student, the gift supports a new instructional space along with updated academic technology across the University. Together, these investments support hands鈥憃n learning, classroom instruction, and student preparation for professional success.

鈥淎cademic Affairs is grateful for the generous gift, which strengthens support for academic excellence and prepares our students to lead with confidence in their respective fields,鈥 noted Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole鈥疻aters. 鈥淭his support will significantly enhance experiential learning opportunities for students in our Department of Public Service programs by creating an authentic residential setting for crime scene investigation that simulates real鈥憀ife crime scenarios. This investment elevates the quality of instruction, deepens student engagement, and prepares graduates for the professional workforce.鈥

The hands鈥憃n simulation lab will be located in Washburn House and will serve both students and regional law enforcement partners. Additionally, the donation will support broader academic needs across the University. Waters shared, 鈥淭he gift provides technology enhancements to the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education. These upgrades will enable faculty to deliver more interactive instruction while ensuring our learning environments reflect the demands of a rapidly evolving world.鈥

Beyond its academic impact, the philanthropic support also advances efforts to better serve students across campus. Gardner鈥慦ebb leadership designated part of the funds to create a one鈥憇top shop for key student services, including financial aid, student accounts, and registration. The consolidated space will improve coordination, communication, and customer service while creating a more seamless experience for students.

Collectively, these investments reflect Gardner鈥慦ebb鈥檚 mission by supporting students academically, personally, and professionally.

Jeff Cogburn

Cogburn joins Gardner鈥慦ebb during a period of strong philanthropic momentum and institutional growth. He was drawn to the opportunity to lead a fully integrated advancement operation at a defining moment in the University鈥檚 trajectory, bringing together strategy, relationships, and execution to support students and advance Gardner鈥慦ebb鈥檚 mission.

鈥淕ardner鈥慦ebb has real momentum, and that鈥檚 a credit to the alumni, parents, donors, supporters, and advancement professionals who have built a strong foundation,鈥 Cogburn highlighted. 鈥淎t its core, advancement is about people. Every relationship we build and every dollar we raise should create opportunity for students and strengthen their experience.鈥

Most recently, Cogburn served as assistant vice chancellor of Alumni Affairs in the Division of Advancement at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), where he led alumni engagement and annual giving strategies that contributed to two consecutive record鈥憇etting fundraising years. Under his leadership, UTC experienced a 212% increase in total dollars raised, a 25% growth in total donors, and a 40% increase in alumni engagement, leading the University of Tennessee System in percentage to goal.

At UTC, Cogburn served as a senior advancement leader during a chancellor transition, helping maintain alignment and momentum amid evolving institutional priorities. He partnered closely with development, advancement services, communications, foundation leadership, and intercollegiate athletics to strengthen engagement, stewardship, and institutional visibility. He also provided executive leadership for alumni engagement, annual giving operations, budgets, and alumni board governance, while collaborating with senior leadership on campaign planning and major gift strategy.

Previously, Cogburn held several advancement leadership roles at Clemson University in South Carolina. His roles included chief development officer and unit lead for the College of Education. In that role, he served on the college leadership team, managed a comprehensive donor portfolio, and partnered with faculty and academic leadership to align philanthropic priorities with institutional strategy. He also served as co鈥慶hair for the Scholarship Pillar of Clemson鈥檚 $1.889 billion Fiercely Forward campaign, advancing student access, affordability, and scholarship investment.

Earlier in his career, Cogburn served at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City. There, he helped co鈥慺ound the institution鈥檚 first coordinated annual giving program, establishing sustainable donor pipelines and comprehensive solicitation strategies. His experience spanned alumni engagement, annual giving, parent philanthropy, major gifts, advancement operations, and board partnership.

Cogburn holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in economics and a master鈥檚 degree in business administration from ETSU. He is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in leadership and professional practice at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

A recognized leader in the advancement profession, Cogburn has received multiple honors, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Excellence in Fundraising Award and the Circle of Excellence and District III Best of District Awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He is a frequent presenter on advancement strategy, alumni engagement, and governance.

As 国产哟哟鈥檚 Vice President for Advancement, Cogburn鈥檚 initial focus will be on listening and learning鈥攂uilding trust, strengthening alignment, and continuing to foster a strong culture of philanthropy across campus. 鈥溾極ne Webb鈥 is more than a phrase; it鈥檚 how the work gets done,鈥 Cogburn emphasized. 鈥淲hen the president, board of trustees, cabinet, alumni, and campus partners are aligned with shared purpose, advancement is positioned to be most effective. I鈥檓 excited to build on the strong foundation already in place and help position Gardner鈥慦ebb for long鈥憈erm success, including future campaign opportunities.鈥

Cogburn also expressed appreciation for the leadership of Interim Vice President of Advancement Karen Bruce during the advancement transition and shared his enthusiasm for joining an energized and committed team.

鈥淔rom my first visit, it was clear that Gardner鈥慦ebb is a special place,鈥 he expressed. 鈥淭he authenticity of the people, the student experience, and the integration of faith and learning stood out immediately. I鈥檓 grateful for the opportunity to be part of what comes next鈥攆or the University and for my family.鈥

Cogburn and his family look forward to becoming active members of the Gardner鈥慦ebb campus and surrounding communities.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擥ifts made on 国产哟哟鈥檚 Double Dawg Day on Thursday, April 16, directly support the scholarships that help students succeed in the classroom and beyond. Such generosity is especially meaningful to first-year nursing major Amber Jimenez. Her scholarship allows her to advance toward her goals with confidence. She hopes donors will continue to support students like her. 鈥淵our donations, big or small, have a powerful impact and influence on all the students at 国产哟哟,鈥 Jimenez emphasized. 鈥淭he donations allow students like me to further our educations and grow as people.鈥

Jimenez first learned about 国产哟哟 when representatives visited her high school. She said the University鈥檚 size, location and emphasis on hands-on learning appealed to her. Once on campus, she discovered a faculty invested in her success. 鈥淢y professors are very supportive and helpful, giving me words of encouragement,鈥 she praised. 鈥淓very faculty and staff member that I have met at 国产哟哟 has had an impact on me.鈥

Among the faculty members who have shaped her experience, Jimenez said Emily Coggins, nursing instructor and clinical coordinator, has been especially instrumental. 鈥淪he has taught me that although I am in the nursing program, I should still be able to enjoy and not miss out on important and special things in my life,鈥 Jimenez reflected.

Her passion for nursing comes from a long-standing desire to serve others. 鈥淚 want to help people and make a positive impact in this world,鈥 Jimenez stated. 鈥淏ecoming a nurse will help me reach that goal.鈥 She plans to pursue a career as either a nurse practitioner (NP) or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) and hopes to continue her education in graduate school.

Jimenez said she has also found meaningful support in her closest friendships. 鈥淢y biggest support at 国产哟哟 has been my roommate and best friend,鈥 she said. 鈥淓very huge milestone that I have had here at GWU, she was always there to witness it.鈥

Campus Events Highlight the Impact of Donors on the Student Experience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳hrough fun activities, storytelling, and visible reminders placed across campus, 国产哟哟 will celebrate Philanthropy Week on April 13鈥16. The observance is designed to help students understand how philanthropy鈥攖he voluntary giving of time, talent, or financial resources to others颅鈥攊mpacts their time at GWU. The initiative ends with Double Dawg Day, inviting alumni, families, and friends to join the GWU community in supporting students through gifts of every size.

Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Shannon Hovis helps coordinate the event. 鈥淓very gift to 国产哟哟 tells a story of generosity and a deep belief in our students,鈥 Hovis asserted. 鈥淒uring Philanthropy Week, we celebrate the alumni, parents, and friends whose support opens doors, creates opportunities, and strengthens the 国产哟哟 experience for every student.鈥

Throughout the week, students will explore how donor generosity has influenced the spaces, programs, and opportunities available to them at GWU. Outside select buildings, signs will share the stories behind those gifts and the individuals who made them possible. These stories reflect decades of commitment to Christian higher education.

hamrick hall business day

For example, the Tucker Student Center stands as a testament to the generosity of Robert and Carolyn Tucker, who offered their gift with the purpose of glorifying God. The Stewart family鈥檚 longtime support echoes their belief that a university should embody excellence, integrity, and strong Christian values. The Godbold family invested in mission-driven programs and scholarships to strengthen the University鈥檚 Christ-centered mission, while Dr. Jack and Ruby Hunt鈥檚 passion for nursing paved the way for the Hunt School of Nursing.

The Dover family and their foundation supported several campus buildings and spaces, including the John R. Dover Jr. Memorial Chapel, a cherished place of worship anchoring the University鈥檚 Christian heritage. And in the 1930s, E.B. Hamrick provided crucial support that helped sustain Boiling Springs Junior College鈥攖oday鈥檚 国产哟哟鈥攄uring a time of need.

24-Hour Day of Giving Strengthens the Future of Healthcare by Supporting Hands鈥慜n Training and Student Research

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敼从 will host the 11th annual Double Dawg Day on April 16, a 24-hour celebration of generosity, community, and the impact of donor support. Each year, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends come together to champion the people, programs, and priorities that strengthen the GWU student experience.

In the College of Health Sciences, donor gifts advance hands-on training and professional preparation. Dr. Tracy Arnold, the college鈥檚 dean and professor of nursing, said recent support has upgraded essential equipment鈥攕uch as hospital beds, low-fidelity manikins, and exercise bikes鈥攁nd helped fund student research and conference presentations.

鈥淭hese resources allow students to apply classroom knowledge in practical and scholarly ways,鈥 Arnold noted. 鈥淓very gift goes toward enhancing academic programs, student experiences, and essential resources that ultimately provide stronger career readiness and increase the confidence of graduates as they prepare to enter the workforce.鈥

Strengthening Nursing Readiness

Ja'Kayla Alexander Ignite Scholar nursing
Ja’Kayla Alexander, an Ignite Scholar,
poses with a manikin.

Nursing students said this equipment is vital to becoming clinically prepared. Senior Abigail Henson, of Kings Mountain, N.C., shared that working with updated hospital beds and manikins prepared her for bedside care. 鈥淭hey provide a safe, hands-on environment to practice nursing skills,鈥 she said. 鈥淧racticing on manikins allows me to learn and grow, ultimately shaping me into a more confident nurse who prioritizes patient safety in real-world care.鈥

Senior India Page, of Boiling Springs, agreed that the equipment gives students a solid foundation for clinical work. 鈥淏eing able to practice skills and get comfortable with (manikins) puts me at an advantage if I鈥檓 asked to perform them on an actual patient during clinical,鈥 she explained. Page said opportunities to practice medication administration, IV insertion, and wound care on manikins made her better prepared for real-world expectations.

Both students expressed deep gratitude for those who give on Double Dawg Day. Henson said, 鈥淵our support directly impacts my education and helps me become a safer, more competent nurse.鈥

Page observed that donor generosity not only strengthens student learning but also supports dedicated nursing faculty. 鈥淭he School of Nursing at 国产哟哟 has some of the best instructors I鈥檝e had the opportunity to learn from,鈥 Page acknowledged. 鈥淭hey work endlessly to give us a solid foundation.鈥

Opportunities for Psychology Research

Donor support also creates academic opportunities for psychology majors Grace Haynie and Rachel Gaura, seniors who conducted undergraduate research and presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Convention (SEPA).

Haynie, who plans to further her education in graduate school, described the research experience as one of the most rewarding opportunities of her 国产哟哟 education. She explained, 鈥淕etting to present our work at conferences, such as SEPA, made me proud of the effort we put into the research. To the donors, I say a big 鈥楾hank you.鈥 Your contributions make it possible for students like me to further my experiences and grow in my psychological knowledge. You have greatly shaped some of my favorite college memories and experiences.鈥

Through her participation in undergraduate research, Gaura said she developed skills that will support her as a ministry leader. 鈥淲orking with both faculty and peers expanded my knowledge of psychology, while also building my confidence in working with professionals,鈥 she noted. 鈥淭hese experiences strengthened my communication, critical thinking, and professionalism, all of which will be essential as I pursue ministry and work closely with youth and young adults. I feel better prepared to understand people thoughtfully, speak confidently, and lead with both knowledge and care in my future career.鈥

Gaura also offered her appreciation to donors. 鈥淵our generosity has truly shaped my college experience at 国产哟哟 and allowed me to grow both academically and personally,鈥 she stated. 鈥淏ecause of your support, my studies feel meaningful and valued, and I feel encouraged knowing that someone believes in my education and future. I hope you will continue giving so other students can have the same opportunities I had.鈥

Practical Exercise Science Training

Exercise science students also benefit from equipment purchased with donor support. Jamiel Col贸n, who earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in exercise science in 2025, will complete his Master of Science in strength and conditioning in 2026. He is also a teaching assistant in 国产哟哟鈥檚 Carolina Chiropractic Plus Human Performance Laboratory.

鈥淏ecause of your previous generosity, our students are not just learning theory from a textbook,鈥 Col贸n affirmed. 鈥淭hey are running real fitness tests, handling industry-standard equipment, and practicing exactly what they鈥檒l be asked to do in collegiate, professional, and private performance settings. Your donated equipment allowed me, personally, to gain hands-on experience with diverse testing protocols, learn proper procedures, interpret data, and manage the inevitable chaos of testing days. That experience gave me a genuine competitive edge in the field of strength and conditioning and accelerated my development as a coach.鈥

Col贸n sees those same benefits continuing for current students. 鈥淭he equipment you helped provide is used multiple times per week to train freshmen and upperclassmen alike,鈥 Col贸n emphasized. 鈥淔reshmen are exposed early to real-world expectations and evolving industry standards, while upperclassmen refine their testing skills, deepen their data analysis abilities, and practice communicating key findings to future clients and athletes. In other words, your support is directly shaping the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals.鈥

He concluded, 鈥淚 would strongly encourage you to give again this year, because the demand for this kind of hands-on education is only growing. Your renewed gift doesn鈥檛 just buy equipment; it creates confident, competent professionals who are truly prepared for the field. You鈥檙e investing in people, and their careers, in a way that simply wouldn鈥檛 be possible without your generosity.鈥
